Here in North Somerset, that could mean decisions about major developments affecting our towns, villages and countryside being taken away from locally elected councillors.

Residents might still be ‘consulted’ but what is the point if local objections can simply be ignored?

We’ve already seen Labour weaken protections for the Green Belt. Now they want to make it easier to push through developments over the heads of local communities.

That isn’t devolution.

It’s taking power away from North Somerset and handing it to a regional mayor, that we didn’t even vote for.

Planning decisions should listen to the people who actually live here.

North Somerset Conservatives will oppose Labour’s attack on local democracy.
