The essence of social chauvinism is: socialism in words, but chauvinism in deeds.

It rests in the implicit belief that ‘our’ imperialists, no matter how huge their crimes, are somehow more redeemable than the ‘dictators’, ‘autocrats’ and ‘despots’ of the third world – because western Europeans are inherently superior people.

Why do so many self-identifying ‘socialists’ refuse to build a movement in solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s titanic struggle against imperialism?

The British Chapter of the Anti-Fascist International is joining the National March for Palestine because we recognise the centrality of the Palestinian struggle to the freedom struggle of all the peoples of the middle east (and the world) for liberation from imperialist domination and war.

After three years of popular opposition to the genocide, during which time millions of Britons have taken to the streets to express their outrage, what has changed? Both Conservative and Labour governments have increased political policing, defined activist groups as terrorists by acts of parliament, and sought to suppress all meaningful opposition to Israel’s crimes – particularly by using the IHRA ‘definition of antisemitism’, which conflates anti-zionism with racism.

Political and economic support for Zionism by our ruling class continues, arms and other forms of support continue to flow from Britain to Israel – and the genocide of Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrian people by the Israeli occupation forces continues likewise.

Our government also uses these repressive laws and methods to suppress opposition to Britain’s criminal involvement in the wars against Iran and Russia, while politicians and media pundits talk about the need for conscription to build the armed forces and threaten to jail antiwar campaigners.

The British state’s support for all this aggression – from the suffocating sieges on Venezuela and Cuba to the genocide and displacement in the middle east, to the aggressive wars against Russia and Iran – is not accidental or coincidental. The brutal repression and exploitation imposed on peoples abroad is part of the same war being waged against workers in Britain as jobs vanish, the cost of living skyrockets and political freedoms are crushed.

The British Chapter of the Anti-Fascist International recognises that we have more in common with the working class of Palestine, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia and China than we do with our own ruling class, and that our struggles are linked.

We aim to build an antiwar movement that is not run by the very same people who are perpetrating these wars and political repression, and to let workers know that they have the power to make a real difference. It is workers who make and move all the supplies for war, workers who fight and workers who put out the propaganda lies. We don’t need to beg politicians for change; we need to organise to use our power to force that change.

Long live the anti-imperialist resistance of the Palestinian people!

This week I spoke with Garland Nixon about the upcoming launch of a new antiwar organisation in Britain, one that has genuinely anti-imperialist politics at its core.

The British Chapter of the Anti-Fascist International will be launching in Bolivar Hall, central London on Saturday 5 September at 1.00pm. Speakers at the event include me, Craig Murray, Chris Williamson, David Miller, Dr Ranjeet Brar and more.

In my discussion with Garland we looked at the obscenity of allowing the party that runs the wars on behalf of British imperialism to also control and direct the ‘antiwar’ movement. This is at the heart of the abject and repeated failure of Stop the War in Britain and similar ‘official’ antiwar organisations in other imperialist countries to do anything to meaningfully impede the war machine, never mind to actually stop a single war.

Indeed, our ‘antiwar’ luminaries regularly and repeatedly stoke warmongering propaganda narratives against Russia, China, Iran and the DPRK, the cornerstones of world anti-imperialist resistance and the primary targets in the sights of the US/British/Nato war machine.

No wonder Iranian comrades in Britain have concluded that “There is no antiwar movement in this country.”

Turkish authorities have detained Russian activists from the DPRK Solidarity Group in Istanbul.

Police raided a youth camp organised by the World Anti-Imperialist Platform in the suburbs of Istanbul, detaining a total of 20 activists, including two Russian citizens – Alexander Mostov and Darya Kadkina – who are activists with the International Solidarity Group with the DPRK (ISG-DPRK).

According to the Platform, police raided the youth camp at 3.00am on 1 July and subsequently detained 20 people – including members of international delegations and Turkish activists – around 8.00am. They are currently being held at the Çanakkale police station.

According to the Solidarity Group, the detainees have been charged with "promoting terrorism", an offence that could carry a penalty of up to five years in prison.

The ISG-DPRK is in contact with all relevant parties and has also submitted a formal appeal to the Russian Consulate in Istanbul.

FREEDOM FOR COMRADE MILOŠ KARAVEZIĆ!

The First Secretary of the League of the Communist Youth of Yugoslavia SKOJ (the youth organisation of the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia), comrade Miloš Karavezić, was arrested near Istanbul at approximately 3.00am on 1 July during an internal anti-Nato conference.

Erdogan's authorities raided the camp of the World Anti-Imperialist Platform, where youth organisations were gathered. At around 8.00am, they violently and unlawfully detained approximately twenty people, including members of the international delegation and Turkish youth activists, among them the First Secretary of SKOJ, Comrade Miloš Karavezić.

All those detained are currently being held at the police station in Çanakkale, where they face accusations of alleged terrorist activities.

This is part of an organised campaign of preventive arrests carried out under the pretext of protecting national security.

From midnight on 28 June until midnight on 10 July, all public gatherings, demonstrations, street marches, press conferences, leaflet distribution and the display of banners have been banned in Ankara and in the areas surrounding Nato military bases. The main access routes to the airport, the area surrounding the summit venue, and the zones where the delegations are accommodated have been placed under the complete control of the military and police.

The actions of the Turkish authorities are contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Türkiye, which guarantees freedom of thought and academic freedom. They are likewise in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Türkiye in 2003, which guarantees freedom of thought and freedom of expression.

SKOJ and New Communist Party of Yugoslavia (NKPJ) will inform the World Anti-Imperialist Platform, Sovintern, the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), the international communist movement, as well as other progressive organizations and individuals around the world, in order to build international pressure for the immediate release of Comrade Miloš Karavezić and all other detained activists.
Comrade Miloš Karavezić is a principled patriot, internationalist, and political activist who has never been convicted of any crime or violated the law.

His detention clearly demonstrates the political nature of this repression and the character of a regime that, under the pretext of combating terrorism, criminalises political opinion and international solidarity.

SKOJ demands that Erdogan's government immediately and unconditionally release Comrade Miloš Karavezić and all other conference participants.

We strongly condemn the violent, unlawful and brutal arrest of the participants during the raid on an event that was internal, peaceful, and organised in accordance with its intended purpose.

This action by the Turkish authorities once again reveals the dictatorial nature of Erdogan's regime, which no longer tolerates even internal political discussion and criticism of the Nato alliance. SKOJ and NKPJ will mobilise progressive forces in Serbia and around the world to secure the release of Comrade Miloš Karavezić and all other activists who are unjustly imprisoned by the Turkish authorities.
