Abbey Wood HIVE

Abbey Wood HIVE The HIVE is an information network available to all members of the Service community ABW is located in Filton, Bristol and is situated over two sites.

Abbeywood (ABW) is the main site for the Defence Equipment & Support agency, including Procurement and Support Project teams. The main site supports the majority of equipment project teams and due to the increase of civilian staff an annex site is located on the opposite side of the A4174. When visiting DE&S ABW car parking is restricted to visitors and must be booked 24 hours in advance by the ho

st. The site is next to the University of West England and peak time traffic affects the entire area. ABW is supported by a network of motorways such as the M4/M32. It also has its own train station on the Templemead line. ABW has its own coffee shops, bar, gym facilities cash point machines, dry cleaning service on site. The main SFA site is situated at Emersons Green, about 5 miles to the East of Abbeywood (ABW) in a place called Mangotsfield. There are 174 PFI houses used by military personnel based in the Bath and Bristol area, which form part of a large development of about 4000 houses. The A4174 ring road and M32 are close by and provide easy access to both the M4 and M5 motorways. Bristol city centre is just 8 miles from Emersons Green and the beautiful city of Bath is only 13 miles away; both provide an abundance of facilities, as well as plenty of things to see and do.

Your move, better supported: Fairer moving costs for UK PASH users

Moving home is never easy, but the Armed Forces are making it a little simpler and fairer.

If you live in Single Living Accommodation (SLA) – in a Mess, Barrack Block or equivalent – and you need to move your things when posted to another unit, there are two ways you can get help:

· UK Private Arrangements Self Help Scheme (UK PASH) – you arrange your own move and claim back some of the costs

· Self Pack Service (SPS) – your unit helps move your belongings through stores

What's changing?

UK PASH remains a popular choice – used by over 1,500 Service personnel last year – and from 1 May 2026, it’s getting even better.

Right now, you can claim back up to £298.56 for things like van hire, a trailer, packing boxes, or a removal firm. That cap isn't changing.

But here's the new bit: you can now also claim Motor Mileage Allowance (MMA) on top of the £298.56. MMA is paid at 25p per mile for one return trip – including any required detours, like picking up a hired van.

In short, you get:

· up to £298.56 for your moving costs

· 25p for every mile you drive

Why does this matter?

Moving further away costs more money. But until now, everyone got the same cap – no matter how far they had to travel. That wasn't fair, especially as personnel don't always get to choose their posting – moving to where Defence needs them.

This change means longer moves get more support. It's a practical improvement that better reflects the costs involved in Service life.

Part of Your Offer

The Armed Forces Offer is about making sure that the people who serve our country are treated fairly and looked after well, with real support when life gets disrupted – like when you need to move home to serve at a new location.

Further information

Full details and information on all the rules around removal support are available in JSP 752, Chapter 12, Section 4.

Extra school funding for Service children: Service Pupil Premium 2025

Extra school funding for Service children: Service Pupil Premium 2025Help your child’s school to qualify for Service Pupil Premium funding by sharing your Service status by 2 October 2025.

The Department for Education (DfE) provides additional funding through the Service Pupil Premium in England. The SPP grant goes directly to academies and non-maintained state schools, as well as local authorities for each school they maintain.

The SPP grant for 2025 is £350 per Service pupil – children from Reception to Year 11 may be eligible.

To help your child’s school to qualify for SPP, Service parents are encouraged to inform schools of their Service status ahead of the autumn census deadline of Thursday 2 October 2025. You can do this by talking to the headteacher or school administration staff.

About the Service Pupil Premium
The main purposes of the Service pupil premium are to:
 help mitigate the negative impact of high mobility on a Service pupil’s education
 enable schools to offer pastoral support to eligible pupils, particularly during times of family separation such as deployments
It is for the school to decide how the money is spent. Funding can be used to help individual pupils or larger support projects.

Am I eligible?
Pupils attract SPP if they meet one of the following criteria:
• One of their parents is serving in the regular Armed Forces (including pupils with a parent who is on full commitment as part of the Full-Time Reserve Service).
• One of their parents died while serving in the armed forces and the pupil receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pensions Scheme.
• They have been registered as a ‘Service child’ in the most recent autumn DfE school census or they do not currently have ‘Service child’ status but they have been registered as a ‘Service child’ on any DfE school census in the past 6 years.
• One of their parents is in the armed forces of another nation and is stationed in England.
