We agree, and it's great to hear this. But now it's time for action.

We also agree that changing the voting system requires a national conversation - one involving the public.

That's why we're calling on Andy Burnham to set up a National Commission on Electoral Reform - to design a better, proportional voting system that's fit for modern Britain.

Today Parliament debated the Representation of the People Bill.

Together with our friends at Compass and Unlock Democracy, we brought a whole load of alarm clocks to Westminster to send our politicians a clear message: it's time to wake up! ⏰

Our rotten voting system leaves millions without a voice. Entire communities have been ignored for decades because they're not seen as priority seats.

We keep getting governments that most of the public never supported - governments that keep collapsing, while the country's problems remain unsolved. We've had enough.

While we're disappointed that the electoral reform amendment - the single biggest amendment since the last general election - was ruled out of scope, this is not the end. Far from it.

Tomorrow we will be back, delivering straight to Number 10 an open letter signed by tens of thousands of activists. We have many more actions planned for the coming weeks and months - stay tuned.

🚨 The electoral reform amendment won't be heard today - it was ruled out of scope.

This is disappointing. But if the government thinks this is the last they'll hear from us, they're badly wrong.

A fair voting system is not a "nice to have." It must be a priority.

Our message to the PM is clear: it's not a Representation of the People Bill if it doesn't address the reason why people are not being represented.

We'll be back in Westminster tomorrow to personally deliver a letter signed by tens of thousands of activists.

It's time for the government to listen.

Billy Bragg is right.

Over and over again, millions of us cast a vote knowing it will likely count for nothing.

It's no wonder so many people are angry, frustrated and disillusioned. It's no wonder many are giving up on voting and losing hope that things can change for the better.

Proportional Representation is a way to give everyone a fair vote and a fair voice.

If democracy means the majority decides, why do most people not have the MP they voted for? 🤨

That’s because the UK's voting system is based on pluralities, not majorities. Putting it simply, it means the candidate with the biggest share of the vote wins - regardless of whether that share is 70% or 30%.

The more different parties and candidates gain significant support, the lower that share can become. So you can easily end up with a winner that the vast majority of voters can't stand, just because the opposition is divided.

Our political landscape has changed, and we think our voting system should too. There are lots of alternatives that are fairer and more democratic - they are collectively called Proportional Representation. Check our last graphic to read more about them!

For years, we heard that Proportional Representation was a fringe demand. That Westminster would never back it. That it wouldn't happen.

Now, in the words of John Rentoul, it's "more likely to happen than not".
