Bristol City Council Fostering

Bristol City Council Fostering Finding foster homes for children in Bristol. By providing a stable and welcoming home for a child you’re giving them the chance for a better future.

Fostering is a rewarding way to make a positive difference to a child’s life and a wonderful way to enrich your own. We welcome people of any ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion. It doesn’t matter whether you’re married, in a civil partnership, or single, whether you have a job, or if you have a disability or long term health issue. There’s no typical foster family, just as there’s no typical child.

Have you considered becoming a parent and child foster carer?

You would help parents develop their parenting skills by having a baby or child and one or both parents placed in your home, for up to 12 weeks or more.

You wouldn't directly look after the child, but you'd help and encourage parents to develop their parenting skills by giving them support.

You would:
✅ Supervise the birth parent and observe how they care for the child
✅ Keep good notes of what you see and observe

Have you heard of Mockingbird?

A Mockingbird constellation is a small supportive community of six to ten foster families who come together to support one another, just like an extended family network.

Foster carers can feel isolated, juggling limited time, the complex needs of the children they care for, and a lack of understanding in their community. This can make organising activities feel overwhelming. However, with Mockingbird, constellations regularly organise sleepovers, activities, day trips, and skill sharing.

Clare, a foster carer in a Mockingbird constellation said "We've done pottery together, that was good and we have been to Puxton Park. It is the social events I like, and it gives you something to do. Sometimes at weekends it’s difficult to know what to do with them, but if you know if there’s an event going on, it’s been nice to go and do something together as a group."

In the video, Andrea a hub home carer explains what a Mockingbird constellation is.

A foster carer recently told us the following about how Mockingbird has supported them: "I didn't come into fostering the traditional way, so I didn’t feel very confident in the fostering community but because of my Mockingbird hub leader, I started going to a lot more fostering events. I started going to support groups that I’d always felt a bit intimidated by, I didn't have a ‘Buddy’ or anything to go with. Going to support groups with my hub leader, and going to events with other people from Mockingbird, I felt more confident."
