🥣 Labour’s free breakfast clubs make a huge difference to Bristol families - children get a great start to the day while parents get more freedom and flexibility and help with the cost of living too. That’s the kind of change Labour was elected to deliver.

📣 On behalf of Bristol Labour, Councillor Tom Renhard - Horfield Ward has signed a joint cross-party statement from Bristol’s political leaders following unrest in Belfast and Southampton

🤝 At unsettling times such as these, it is vital to put place first and set aside political differences in the interests of standing together in support of our communities

📣 Statement from Bristol’s political leaders following unrest in Belfast and Southampton:

We know that recent events currently in the news have fuelled anxiety in many of our communities and that some people have been made to feel unsafe. At times like this, it is more important than ever that we come together in solidarity. We in Bristol are proud of our diversity and the many rich cultures that make our city what it is.

We stand together to condemn the violent and senseless attack that took place in Belfast earlier this week. Our thoughts are with those affected and we recognise the impact such incidents have on individuals, families and communities. It’s right that the perpetrator should be subject to the proper police and judicial process in this case, and that space is allowed for this to happen.

We’re also appalled by the murder of Henry Nowak and the resulting disorder in Southampton last week. We know this tragic death and the subsequent unrest has caused upset and concern in our communities.

These acts and others like them are committed by individuals, not communities. No community should be singled out or targeted as a result.

We strongly oppose any attempt to use these incidents as opportunities to spread hate and division. This is wrong, and we oppose anyone seeking to promote fear, hostility or discrimination, in our communities or anywhere else.

Bristol is a place where everyone is welcome. Together we stand united against hate in all its forms. We are committed to supporting inclusive, respectful and safe communities for everyone.

This week marks the start of Pride Month when we mark the history and achievements of our LGBTQ+ community.

While there is much to celebrate, this is also a difficult time for some in the LGBTQ+ community, given the EHRC guidance which has now been laid before Parliament. Many of you have contacted me about this over the past week or so.

I am looking closely at the guidance and have real worries about its impact not only on trans people, but on people who don’t conform to gender stereotypes, or anyone who fears being judged or policed on the basis of their appearance.

I will be making arrangements to meet with constituents who are personally affected. I will also be talking to like-minded parliamentary colleagues about how we can best respond to this guidance, and try to find ways in which to mitigate the proposals

A board of local people will choose how to spend the funding over the next ten years

Brilliant news for Bristol!

I am thrilled to share that our city has secured £13.5 million in Government funding for the Temple Quarter Heat Network, one of four awards from the national £25 million Green Heat Network Fund. This investment, awarded to Vattenfall as part of Bristol City Leap, will connect the existing Temple, Old Market and Redcliffe heat networks into one integrated low-carbon system.

It’s a tribute to the foresight of Mayor Marvin Rees and key members of his team, who set up City Leap as a way to leverage finance into decarbonising our city at a time when there was little Government interest or support.

Right now, 35 buildings across Bristol are connected to the city’s heat network, supplying clean heat equivalent to almost 13,500 homes. With this funding that number is set to grow, with up to four new connections planned in the coming year alone. This is exactly the kind of investment that moves us away from expensive imported gas, lowers long-term energy costs, and helps deliver clean power for Britain by 2030.

A huge thank you to Minister Martin McCluskey and the Government for backing Bristol’s green energy ambitions!

💸 The Labour Government is giving Bristol £15.5m to expand its heat network

🌹 The former Labour administration in Bristol expanded our city's low-carbon heat network, built the largest water-source heat pump in England, and pioneered the landmark City Leap deal - bringing in investment to make homes more energy efficient and provide energy that's better for the environment. It’s great to have a Labour Government that’s building on our work.

"This is a major step forward in the development of longer-term plans"
