When construction of the began in 1831, the eyes of the world were on 23-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his bold plan to build the highest and longest bridge in the world. Many of the bridge’s secrets, like the vaulted chambers sealed inside the abutment, were lost when Brunel died.

Hard Hat Tours are every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 2:30pm (10:30am during school holidays).

One of the most frequently asked questions in the Museum is how did they get the chains from one tower to the other.

It's a really great question, with an answer that isn't particularly surprising once you've learned it. Each chain was fixed in place on one tower, lowered into the Avon Gorge, then winched up the other side and attached.

The bridge was constructed using a lot of man (and mule) power.
