Bristol City Council are consulting about your experience and thoughts about the library service to inform their policy for the next few years. The link to feedback about libraries is here;

For this new strategy, we want to understand how people are using libraries now and what you think would encourage people to use libraries more.

A date for your diary, Monday 18th May, cake and hot drinks at the Meadow Vale Community Cafe, BS5 7RF from 10.30am plus a fascinating talk starting at 11am about the forgotten nautical women.

🗣️ Talk on Nautical women - Women Sailors and the women of Sailortowns.

We are delighted to have educator, public speaker and acclaimed writer Rosemary L. Caldicott as our guest speaker at Meadow Vale’s Community Café on Monday 18 May.

Rosemary will be talking about her book Nautical Women – Women Sailors and the Women of Sailortowns - which explores stories of women whose lives were inextricably linked to the sea.

They include the women of sailortowns struggling to keep out of the dreaded workhouse and resisting the prowling press gangs; and of the courageous and skilful cross-dressing women sailors, some of Bristol, who went to extraordinary lengths to hide their gender.

These stories challenge our stereotypes of women in earlier societies and reveal the courage of those who ‘ran away to sea’ by exposing their struggles against poverty.

Rosemary will discuss these women’s motivation as well as their adventures and inevitable exposure.

The café runs from 10.30am – 12.30pm – with the talk starting at 11am. All welcome.

A fascinating history talk coming to Speedwell with free cake and hot drinks

☕️ On Monday 30th March we have a special visit from Stella Man. She is the Consultant Director of Glenside Hospital Museum. She will be discussing mental health and give you a snapshot of the life of both staff and patients at the former Glenside Hospital.

Come along to our community cafe for some tea, cake and an insight to some local history.

We look forward to seeing you there

Part of Nibletts Hill will be closed to traffic from Monday 16th March

You may have noticed warning signs appearing at the foot Nibletts Hill, near the junction with Crews Hole Rd and further up Nibletts Hill. The stone wall on one side of the section of Nibletts Hill that is just one car width, needs repair. So the section of road that goes downhill from the junction with Dundridge Lane, almost to Bull Lane has to be shut while repairs are made.

Works are predicted to take from 16th March to 29th May but hopefully work will progress more quickly than that. The traffic order does allow for the work to overrun.

Details are on https://one.network/?tm=GB148194491

Are you a disabled person or a carer? Could you help people enjoy your local park even more?

Are you a disabled person or a carer who would like to show off your local park?

The charity Your Park - Bristol and Bath are offering training to become a sensory walk guide. More details on the poster shown with this post.

One of our members, who is visually impaired, led some wonderful sensory walks in St George Park and on Troopers Hill, sadly she has moved away. It would be fantastic if new people took up this challenge to show us how to experience our parks and green spaces differently.

Not long to go to the meeting on Thursday 5th March 6pm-8pm at Air Balloon Hill Primary School.

Residents in Crews Hole may be particularly keen to attend now that it is clear that the following will NOT be provided on Crews Hole Rd as part of the scope of the Liveable Neighbourhoods Scheme:

1) a safer crossing to the children's nursery, Kiddi Caru at 261 Crews Hole Rd

2) a safer crossing at the junction of Crews Hole Rd and Troopers Hill Rd

3) more protection for people emerging from Public Right of Way BCC/527/10 on Crews Hole Rd (close to the junction with Strawberry Lane)

The councillor for that part of Crews Hole is Fabian Breckels St George Troopers Hill Labour/Co-operative Councillor. He will be there at the workshop.

For those of you with priorities for other parts of St George you will have Councillor Rob Bryher for St George West and Cara Lavan & Abi Finch, St George Central Councillors plus a range of council officers to talk through your ideas.

If you can't make it to the meeting but have ideas for improving your area you can contact your local councillors. For ideas to improve local streets, particular in terms of safety, you can add those ideas to https://www.bristol.gov.uk/residents/streets-travel/tell-us-about-a-road-safety-concern

What do you value and care about in their your area, and what would you like to see in the future. Council officers and St George Councillors will be on hand to discuss the feasibility of ideas.
