In this final edition of Desider, we sat down with Catherine, Senior Logistics Operations Manager. She reflects on a remarkable career, from leading major ammunition movements, including efforts supporting Ukraine, to receiving the Resolute Spirit Award at the Women in Defence Awards 2025.

Read about Catherine's best advice and her hobbies that keep her grounded.πŸ‘‡

πŸ”΅ What does your role involve?

πŸ’¬ I oversee logistics across all Defence Munitions sites, ensuring the UK’s Armed Forces receive the critical ammunition they need, wherever and whenever required. My role involves balancing immediate operational demands with strategic planning, managing compliance, transport coordination, material accounting and fostering collaboration across Defence to maintain agile supply chains. At its core, it’s about leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, anticipating challenges and making decisions under pressure.

πŸ”΅ What keeps you energised about working in Defence?

πŸ’¬ Knowing that our work directly contributes to the safety, capability and effectiveness of those who serve our country fosters a deep sense of pride and motivation. It’s incredibly inspiring to be part of an organisation where collaboration, innovation and resilience are essential to success. Working alongside talented and dedicated colleagues to tackle complex challenges and deliver meaningful results is what drives me every day.

πŸ”΅ What is your greatest accomplishment to date?

πŸ’¬ I am proud to have led major ammunition movements, including efforts supporting Ukraine, which earned me the Resolute Spirit Award at the Women in Defence Awards 2025 and an invitation to 10 Downing Street. Balancing a demanding career and motherhood, and overcoming health challenges after a medical discharge from the RAF, has been a journey of resilience and growth that has shaped who I am today.

πŸ”΅ Who or what has shaped who you are?

πŸ’¬ My time in the RAF had a huge influence on who I am today. The challenges I experienced during my service career, including operational deployments and leadership under pressure, taught me resilience, adaptability and the importance of teamwork. Those lessons continue to shape how I lead and approach challenges today.

πŸ”΅ What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

πŸ’¬ Focus on what you can control. In high-pressure operational environments, uncertainty is inevitable. By focusing on what you can influence, you can remain grounded, resilient and forward thinking. β€œFemininity is a strength, not a weakness.” Embracing femininity as a strength is a powerful reminder that authenticity and individuality are assets, not limitations, in any professional setting.

Fantastic collaboration = big milestones achieved. πŸ™Œ

Phase 2c of the Maritime Multi Link (MML) programme has achieved Equipment Delivery Date, marking a significant step forward in how Royal Navy ships share critical battlefield information.

The upgrade enables tactical data to be communicated over the horizon via satellite meaning ships can share a real-time picture of the operational environment far beyond line of sight.

The SACC Delivery Team, the Navy Acquisition Programme Team and Navy Command will now begin fitting this capability across 13 platforms, including Type 23 Frigates, Type 45 destroyers, and Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.

Well done to everyone involved!

Proud moment alert. πŸ“Έ πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

We've accepted the final Tranche 1 F-35B Lightning, completing delivery of the UK's first batch of the world's most advanced fighter jet. Flying from our Queen Elizabeth Class carriers, these aircraft are a powerful symbol of UK defence capability, today and for decades to come.

Griffon Marine has successfully completed its contract, converting the Royal Marines' Offshore Raiding Craft fleet into the next-generation Commando Raiding Craft.

The result? A battle-ready craft for 21st-century littoral warfare, and proof of what industry and Defence can achieve together. 🀝

Congratulations to everyone at Griffon Marine and across Defence who made this happen. This is what engineering excellence looks like. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

20 apprentices. 35 teams. 29 countries. One winner. πŸ†

At Defence Cyber Marvel 2026 in Singapore, 20 of our digital engineering apprentices joined more than 2,500 cyber professionals from 29 countries for one of the most challenging international exercises in Defence.

Conducted by the British Army Cyber Association, the multilateral exercise featured several distinct storylines where participants had to understand the real-world impacts of cyber threats and make critical decisions under pressure.

As the only all-apprentice team in the competition, they went up against 35 teams and won. All while organising and funding the trip themselves.

Their success reflects not just their own talent, determination and hard work, but the strength of the DE&S Digital Engineering Apprenticeship programme. πŸ’ͺ

Congratulations to everyone involved. πŸ‘
