Ashcombe Primary School, part of the Kaleidoscope Multi-Academy Trust, wanted to transform its outdoor space into somewhere children could be active, adventurous and engaged in their learning.

Working closely with the school, we created a play environment that encourages children to challenge themselves, develop physical skills and use their imagination.

From climbing and balancing to exploring different challenges, the new space is already making a real difference to outdoor play at Ashcombe.

If you’re hoping to have your new playground ready for children to enjoy by spring 2027, a little forward planning can make all the difference.

Here are a few steps to get the process moving:

📐 1. Audit your outdoor space
Look at every available area and consider slopes, shade, drainage and existing features worth keeping.

🎯 2. Define your play vision
Agree your priorities, from developmental goals and curriculum links to SEND provision, with input from staff and pupils.

🧩 3. Create purposeful zones
Think about how active, quiet, social and sensory areas can work together.

🤸 4. Choose flexible play elements
Multi-use and moveable equipment can make a small space work harder, supporting physical skills, balance and imaginative play.

🌿 5. Think about surfacing
Choose safe, sustainable surfacing solutions that are suitable for the way your space will be used.

📣 PRODUCT FOCUS: MESSY PLAY STATION 📣

Our unique Messy Play Station takes sand play to new levels, giving children the chance to scoop, lift, transport, pour and experiment as they explore how sand moves through the different chutes.

And while it might look like simple fun, there’s plenty of learning happening along the way.
* Physical development through lifting, pulling, reaching and climbing
* Fine and gross motor skills as children grip, scoop and manipulate materials
* Problem-solving and early STEM learning as they experiment with movement, weight, flow and cause and effect
* Sensory development through the texture, weight and movement of sand
* Communication and collaboration as children work together, share resources and create their own games
* Spatial awareness and confidence as they navigate the different levels and see their play from new perspectives

The pulley adds another layer of challenge, encouraging children to work out how to move sand between levels, while the elevated platform creates opportunities for imaginative and collaborative play.

It’s a brilliant example of how thoughtfully designed outdoor play can turn a simple experience like playing with sand into rich opportunities for learning, development and discovery.

How lovely is this thank you message from the children at Lakenheath Community Primary School’s after-school club? The children were some of the first to put their new Oak Climber to the test, and it’s safe to say they loved it! Headteacher Michael was quick to share their thanks, which is always lovely to hear after a new installation.

The Oak is the largest climber in our unique Legends of the Forest range, designed with children’s physical development, confidence and sense of adventure in mind. From climbing and balancing to navigating different challenges, it offers plenty of opportunities for children to test themselves, build new skills and enjoy active outdoor play.
