Beware of scam calls from fraudsters falsely claiming to be from the "Sussex Police Cyber Crime Unit" ⚠️

On Saturday (10 October), we became aware of scammers targeting members of the public and requesting personal information, including passwords and other sensitive details.

It has been reported that the caller ID may appear to show a legitimate police phone number, however, these calls are being made from alternative sources.

Remember 👉 Sussex Police will never ask for your passwords, bank details, PIN numbers or other sensitive financial information over the phone.

These fraudsters may change the name of the police unit they claim to be from, so remain vigilant.

We would like to reassure the public that our phone lines are operating as normal.

If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from Sussex Police, let us know. You can do this by filling an online reporting form. Alternatively, you can contact us by calling 101.

🚨 Rural Roads Alert 🚨

As autumn progresses, the lower sun angle and tree cover are creating dangerous shadow conditions on rural roads. Pedestrians, cyclists, dog walkers, and motorists may become difficult to see in shaded stretches, even during bright daylight.

This is a seasonal issue that affects all rural road users — increased awareness, visibility and action can help prevent collisions and keep our communities safe.

👟 Pedestrians & Dog Walkers:
• Wear high-visibility or light-coloured clothing.
• Where possible, walk facing oncoming traffic.
• Keep dogs on short leads close to the verge.
• Be aware that you may be invisible to drivers until the last second.

🚴 Cyclists:
• Use front and rear lights, even during the day.
• Wear reflective or high-vis clothing.

🚗 Drivers:
• Slow down on tree-lined and shaded rural roads.
• Use headlights or sidelights to improve your visibility to others.
• Be prepared for pedestrians, dog walkers and cyclists to appear suddenly from shaded areas.

✅ Let’s keep Sussex’s rural roads safe for everyone this autumn.

Today we launch the Shelley Memorial Sponsorship Campaign🌟🎉🌟

We have the design, location, and planning permission; now we need your help to raise the money to deliver a fantastic public artwork celebrating the life and work of our great Romantic and radical poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley.

By sponsoring one of the leaves, which form the decorative and romantic element of the artwork and take their inspiration from Shelley’s iconic poem "Ode to the West Wind", you can help us achieve our fundraising target and be part of this exciting community-led project. 🥰

As we enter the final stages of fundraising, we are inviting all of our supporters to help the project over the line by becoming a sponsor.

✅ Sponsor a leaf: Donate today at www.shelleymemorialproject.co.uk/donate

✅ Learn more about sponsorship opportunities: www.shelleymemorialproject.co.uk/sponsorship

We will acknowledge all sponsors on our website, via social media, and on a donors' plaque displayed alongside the artwork in Horsham Park.

To find out more about this opportunity and our project progress, email: [email protected]
Thank you for your support – we can’t do this without you! 😊

The final verses of Ode to the West Wind
‘Drive my dead thoughts over the universe
Like wither'd leaves to quicken a new birth!
And, by the incantation of this verse,

Scatter, as from an unextinguish'd hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unawaken'd earth

The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind,
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?’

The aim of Greentime17 is to make 17 minutes per day in nature part of the national psyche – a daily habit much like getting your 10k steps in or eating five a day – and the antidote to screen time. The 17 minutes is based on a piece of research from the University of Exeter which shows that 120 mins per week can benefit our health and wellbeing. And by spending time in nature, people are more likely to take care of it – win-win for people and planet.

It’s part of the Eden Project’s Nature Connections programme and funded by the Lottery, Ashken Family Foundation and BUPA - delivered in partnership with the Wildlife Trusts in some of the areas where the Eden Project is delivering therapeutic horticulture activities – Cornwall, Morecambe, Liverpool, Gwent, Belfast and Dundee. A training element is also going to follow.

Greentime17 is a simple invitation to spend 17 minutes a day in nature – wherever you are, whatever the weather, and however you like to do it.

We have approved funding to introduce the Low Income Family Tracker (LIFT) data tool to help Horsham residents access vital financial support that they may be missing out on.

At a full Council meeting on 7 October, councillors agreed to a three- year subscription to the LIFT software and a ‘Better Off Calculator’ tool. Additionally, funding was agreed to employ a Cost-of-Living Officer and Citizens Advice Adviser to successfully deliver the initiative.

LIFT, a new data tool developed by Policy in Practice, uses anonymised data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Council to identify households eligible for benefits such as Pension Credit, Winter Fuel Allowance, Attendance Allowance, and Free School Meals, but who are not currently claiming them.

Residents who are eligible for additional financial support will be contacted by the Council and signposted to online claim forms.
