If you liked Shona MacLean's Jacobite thriller, The Bookseller of Inverness, then you'll love her new book!

The Cromarty Library Circle is a non-crime historical novel set on the Black Isle in the 1830s. Its memorable cast of fictional characters are members of a real-life literary society that was active in the town of Cromarty at the time, and the novel explores how they negotiate the challenges of life and their relationships with each other in a turbulent and eventful year.

It's a captivating and engaging read that brilliantly evokes the atmosphere of small-town life in Scotland in the 1830s.

Shona will be appearing at A Write Highland Hoolie on Saturday November 7 at 11 am. Tickets are already in high demand, so make sure you book yours now at www.a-write-highland-hoolie.com/book-now to avoid disappointment.

Dolly Parton leaves behind an extraordinary legacy — not only through her music and storytelling, but through her belief in the power of books and literacy.

In 1995, inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly founded the Imagination Library, providing free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five. What began in her home community in Tennessee grew into a global programme, helping millions of children discover the joy of reading and supporting families to build a culture of reading together.

For those of us who work in adult and community learning, Dolly’s message feels particularly powerful: access to books, learning and literacy can change lives and open doors.
Her generosity has helped generations of children develop a love of reading — and, in doing so, has helped build the foundations for lifelong learning.

Thank you, Dolly, for reminding the world of the importance of literacy and learning. ❤️📚

Rest in peace, Dolly Parton (1946–2026).

Schools may be heading back but there is still time to complete The Reading Agency's Summer Reading Challenge 2026! It finishes on 31August. If you signed up during the summer holidays there's still time to head down to your library to catch up on your reading and claim your stickers, certificate & medal 🥇📜👏

And as a further activity, the characters are hidden about the library as part of a Treasure Hunt. Finding them is tricky – but there is a reward at the end🕵️✨

Let’s hope the teachers in Skye and Lochalsh are settling in to their classrooms and looking forward to the new year. I wonder if these teachers from 2001 still think of August as a new beginning 😊
We have very few photographs of teachers or pupils from Plockton High School at all and would love to add some to our collection please.
