Broadway Tower

Broadway Tower Broadway Tower is a unique Capability Brown Folly open to visitors wanting to experience great English heritage in an inspiring location.

Graphic displays on three floors, roof viewing platform and Tower Shop are a must for Cotswold visits. Broadway Tower is a folly and the brainchild of the18th Century landscape designer, Capability Brown. His vision was carried out for George William 6th Earl of Coventry with the help of the architect James Wyatt and completed in 1798. It’s located on Broadway Hill, near the village of Broadway Wo

rcestershire at the second highest point of the Cotswolds after Cleeve Hill. The tower is 1,024 feet (312 metres) above sea level and stands at 55 feet (17 metres) high. Over the years, the tower has been home to the printing press of Sir Thomas Phillipps, and served as a country retreat for artists including William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones in the 1880s. Today, the tower is a pay on entry tourist attraction and the centre of a country park that has a herd of red deer, a restored Royal Observer Corps nuclear bunker and a memorial to the bomber crew who crashed on the Hill in WW2 on a training flight. The Tower houses exhibitions on three floors about the history of its occupants covering the work of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement; the story of the Royal Observer Corps in World War Two and the Cold War and the story of the crashed bomber. From the top of the Tower there are stunning views.

The Armstrong Whitworth A.W.38 Whitley was one of three British twin-engine, front line medium bomber types in service with the Royal Air Force at the outbreak of the Second World War (the others were the Vickers Wellington and the Handley Page Hampden). It took part in the first RAF bombing raid on German territory, and remained an integral part of the early British bomber offensive until the introduction of four-engined "heavies". Its front line service included maritime reconnaissance with Coastal Command, while also being employed in the second line roles of glider-tug, trainer and transport aircraft.

The aircraft was named after Whitley, a suburb of Coventry, home of one of Armstrong Whitworth's plants.

RAF veterans from across the county came together at Broadway Tower on Sunday 2nd June to remember the airmen who died when their Whitley bomber crashed into the hillside 70 years ago.

A new memorial was unveiled in honour of the crew. A brief inter-denominational service was held at the memorial stone which marks the spot where the Whitley Bomber crashed.

Pilot HG Hagen, Sgt EG Ekins, Flt Sgt DH Kelly, Sgt DA Marriott and Sgt RS Phillips were killed when the aircraft they were in came down less than 200 yards from the tower on June 2, 1943.

The aircraft was an obsolescent Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V Bomber from no.24 Operational Training unit, Honeybourne serial no.Z6639. The Whitley had taken off from Honeybourne on a training flight shortly after lunch. Soon after, the weather worsened and airborne crews were recalled to base because of the appalling conditions. The crew was inexperienced and the most likely explanation for the tragedy is that they became disorientated and descended to ascertain their position. The Whitley crashed into high ground just 200 yards from the Royal Observer Corps post at Broadway Tower at 14.15hrs. The crew except for the rear gunner were killed on impact but he later died of his injuries.

Thanks to the The Wartime Memories Project - RAF Honeybourne for the crash details
