An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Our apples have had a great year so far! We have a number of different varieties of apple growing in cordons and stepovers. Cordons and stepovers are great ways to grow apples in smaller gardens.

Some of our best varieties are Katy and Discovery.

Did you know the 11th Duke of Hamilton had his very own personal piper?

Michael McCarfae was a prized bagpipe player who accompanied the Duke around Europe, introducing him with his acclaimed pipe playing.

Previously the descendants of McCarfae kindly donated the castle a portrait of Michael. However, more recently a kilt pin belonging to the famed piper has been donated by the family, which is now on public display at Brodick Castle.

‼️We are currently on VERY HIGH alert for wildfires as of today‼️

Please take care of yourselves and the outdoors and behave responsibly. This means:

❌DO NOT light ANY fires, including disposable barbecues
❌DO NOT leave litter
✅DO call 999 if you see a fire

To stay up-to-date with fire safety advice and guidance please go to: firescotland.gov.uk/outdoors/wildfires

Or visit Scottish Fire and Rescue Service page for more information.

A very high wildfire warning is in place for Eastern Highlands, Eastern and Southern Scotland from today (Wednesday, 12 August) until Thursday, 13 August.

Everyone should avoid lighting outdoor fires or barbecues. A single spark can cause significant damage, and there is no such thing as a harmless fire.

You can help prevent the risk of wildfires by sharing this post with your family, friends, and any visitors or tourists.

If you see an outdoor fire, call 999 immediately. Give the location and any other relevant information so we can respond quickly.

Have you ever wondered why there are plastic bags on some of our Rhododendrons?

They are our air layers. Air layering is a method of propagation where wounds are made on the plant you're propagating and then wrapped in a damp mixture of sphagnum moss and bark chippings. After 3 seasons of growth they should have produced a root ball. The air layer is then cut from the plant at the bottom of the air layer and potted up. The plants then need another season or two before they can be planted out in the garden.

Mesembryanthemum… easy for you to say 😃
Also known as Livingstone’s Daisy, this sun worshipper opens in bright sunshine and likes a well-drained spot. If lifted in the autumn and placed under glass, it can be planted out again the following year.
