Two incidents yesterday, we attended a car fire at Marley Head and after drill night we attended a large rubbish fire in the Diptford area, where water was In short supply so we protected the nearby crops and hedge while waiting for the fire to burn to a level where we had enough water within the fire appliance to fully extinguish it.

Yesterday we were called along with our friends from Bovey Tracey Fire Station to a chimney fire in the Sigford area.
It proved to be a difficult chimney as it was fully involved from top to bottom.
Crews used a ladder to administer water from above whilst also attacking it from the fireplace recess below.
As this was a very old property there were some wooden joists that penatrated the chimney breast and had become involved which meant an access hole had to be made into the chimney on the first floor to enable the fire in the joists to be cut away.
This was a lengthy process with crews returning home in the early hours of this morning.

A career in the fire services can take you off in a number of different directions, you could choose to become a blue light driver or qualified to lead a team at operational incidents, this past week has been one of celebration for us as Firefighter Robin Hughes past his incident command course and is now able to take the fire engine out as the officer in charge and since becoming qualified he has already dealt with a number of incidents, one of them leading a sector with our partner agencies to help with the evacuation of a number of properties during the recent WW2 bomb incident in Plymouth.
Robin has worked hard to achieve this milestone by running numerous scenario drills and a large amount of self study, he attended a five day course where he had to prove he could safely run various incidents to a satisfactory conclusion, he performed to the highest of standards.
Nice one Robin, we are all proud of your efforts and results and how you have helped make our station and team that little bit more resilient. ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Yesterday we had the pleasure of joining the Buckfastleigh WI to provide some first aid training.
The WI kindly donated a defibrillator to the town and it is housed on the wall near Mardle Way carpark and they asked for some familiarisation in its use so CM Cartwright, Ff Leaney and Ff James gave training in what to do if you are the first person on scene of a medical event, CPR and public use defibrillators.
It was a fantastic evening and thank you to the WI who made us very welcome and made it a very enjoyable session.

Today we were called just after 17:45 to reports of a disposable Bbq which had caused a fire in a gorse bush near Top Tor, Dartmoor. Members of the public had witnessed a van drive away having dumped a disposable BBQ into the gorse which rapidly ignited. Thankfully the wind wasn't travelling in the opposite direction as this could have had serious consequences. We used a hose reel jet and thermal imaging camera to make sure the fire was fully out and removed the disposable BBQ from the Moor.
Its forecast to be nice weather in the next few days so many of us will be heading out into the beautiful area in which we live but maybe take a nice picnic and leave the bbq's at home. ๐Ÿงบ ๐Ÿฅช ๐Ÿฐ

Some of the skills you learn as a firefighter can really assist you in everyday life and give you confidence that if your family, neighbours or a stranger in the street needed help you would be able to make a difference, a case in point was tonight's training which was first aid, we are lucky here at Buckfastleigh as one of our firefighters is a HART paramedic (Hazardous Area Response Team) so the training we have is very realistic and equips us well for whatever scenario we may encounter either whilst on duty or in our everyday lives.
If you are looking for news skills and have a desire to help those around you, we are recruiting so pop along and see us or drop us a message and who knows where it could lead you ๐Ÿš’.

When you hear your friends at Bovey Tracey Fire Station along with the fire cadets are doing a car wash in aid of the firefighters charity, it would be rude not to attend.
They are washing until 3:30pm why not pop down and help this amazing charity, the dirtier your vehicle the better. ๐Ÿคฃ

Busy day for us yesterday, at 12:35 we were called as part of a ten appliance attack on a property fire in Bigbury on Sea where our crews assisted with numerous tasks and we left the incident ground at 7pm.
On the way back to Buckfastleigh we were diverted to a chimney fire in Ivybridge, we used our chimney gear to extinguish a fire within a chimney and checked for hot spots using our thermal imaging camera, again setting off for home until we were once again diverted to a report of a fire in a kitchen at a public house in Paignton.
On arrival our colleagues from Torquay had already dealt with a small fire on a grill pan and we got to work using our positive pressure ventilation fan to help clear the building of smoke.
We finally made it home at 10:30pm, cleaned our equipment and appliance before returning to our homes. ๐Ÿš’

Yesterday at approximately 2:30pm we were mobilised for stand by duties at Paignton Fire Station, stand by's are when fire service resources are committed at various incidents and appliances are moved around to ensure fire cover is available for all areas within a reasonable timescale.
On the way to Paignton we were diverted to a large fire in a derelict hotel in Torquay as part of a "make pumps 10" incident, a "make pumps" is when the officer in charge requests the resources he or she believes they require to deal with the incident.
The same hotel was involved in a fire on the 1st floor on Friday night which saw the attendance of five fire appliances.
We assisted with running the breathing apparatus sector and the Breathing Apparatus Entry Control board.
Fire appliances remained at the scene throughout the night and we returned home at 7pm, whilst we were in Torquay fire cover for Buckfastleigh was provided by Greenbank fire station. ๐Ÿš’

Training was the name of the game this week, on Monday we attended a course here on station for a refresher and to cover new working practices when crewing the ICU (Incident Command Unit) which is based in Totnes, we are a satalite station for the vehicle and crew it when the Totnes team are otherwise committed.
The vehicle is used as a command point at larger incidents to enable clear communication and control throughout the incident ground and to our control room in Clyst St Mary.
Following this course which was really beneficial and really enjoyed by us all we completed Road Traffic Accident training at our weekly drill night.
We are still recruiting and would love to meet like minded persons who would enjoy being part of a close knit team whilst earning an income.
Either contact us through FB or drop in to the station on a Tuesday night between 7pm and 9pm. ๐Ÿš’
