✏️ Back to School / College Week 📚

We hope all the children and young people we support transition well into their new classes, settle in with their new teachers and have a positive start to the new school year. 💛

A new school year can bring lots of excitement, but also nerves and uncertainty. So we’re thinking of all our wonderful foster children, foster carers and families as they begin the next chapter. 🌟🍎

Here’s to a happy, settled and successful year ahead! 🚌✏️📚

💡 Connection before correction.
When kids are overwhelmed by big emotions, their brains are in survival mode. That means lectures, discipline, and problem-solving won't land yet.

First we connect. Then we teach.

Try words like:

• "I can see you're really upset right now."
• "That was really frustrating, huh?". "I'm here with you. Let's take a minute."
• “Your feelings make sense."
• "Let's calm our bodies first and then we'll figure this out together."

When kids feel understood, their nervous systems start to settle and that's when they're able to learn, listen, and repair.

Connection doesn't mean there are no limits, It means we help regulate first, then guide behavior second.

Results day can feel like a defining moment for young people, particularly when expectations are high or outcomes do not match what they had hoped for.

Our latest guide supports parents, carers and educators in helping young people approach results day with perspective, reassurance and confidence.

The guide explores:
• Setting the tone early and reducing pressure before the day
• Normalising different outcomes and preparing for next steps
• Staying calm, present and supportive when results arrive
• Exploring options and alternative pathways together
• Encouraging reflection without rumination
• Celebrating strengths, qualities and achievements beyond grades

With clear, practical advice, this resource helps adults support young people before, during and after results day, whatever their outcomes.

Why do so many children seem to hit 6–9 years and suddenly become more emotional?

Bigger reactions. More tears. Irritability. Clinginess. Anxiety. Frustration. Emotions that seem to go from 0–100.

For many children, part of the answer may be adrenarche — an early hormonal stage that begins before puberty and can influence mood, stress and emotional regulation.

It doesn’t mean every difficult moment is hormonal, and it certainly doesn’t mean children need fixing.

But understanding what may be happening inside their developing brain and body can completely change the way we respond.

Sometimes it isn’t “just behaviour”.

It’s development.

Planning to watch the eclipse on Wednesday evening?

The best viewing conditions are expected in the south, whilst a weather front pushing into the northwest is likely to bring cloud and some rain
