Making Burley More Accessible and Inclusive

So much of what happens in Burley isn't always as visible as the brilliant Burley Summer Festival, the Christmas Lights installation and switch-on, the Market and Craft Fair, or the Duck Race. There's a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes - powered by residents, volunteers, local groups and businesses who genuinely care about making Burley the best it can be.

Accessibility has been one our village priorities for a long time. At the end of last year, Dr Caroline Rayment highlighted the need to make Burley more accessible and inclusive for everyone, while making sure that any changes are realistic and sustainable.

Since then, a number of village organisations have been chatting informally about what this could look like. Those early conversations have identified some important themes - from physical access and sensory needs to social connection, communication and making sure people feel welcome everywhere in the village.

The Burley Summer Festival—with its focus on community, wellbeing and togetherness— feels like the perfect time to ask you, as a Burley resident, what you need from your village.

We'd love to hear thoughts, ideas and experiences, and to know how you might like to be involved in shaping positive change through this survey: https://tally.so/r/1A05LO

This work will be a collaboration between Grange Park Surgery, Burley Parish Council, Dementia Friendly Burley, Walkers Are Welcome, Burley in Wharfedale Community Trust, our local churches, schools, other organisations and, most importantly, you.

West Field (land next to Iron Row)

This week, contractors for Bradford Council Sports & Leisure Department begin work on the development of the land on the West Field into a winter sports pitch. Initially enabling works will commence, including spraying the site to remove existing grass (to ensure the land can be appropriately cultivated). This will be followed by a package of earthworks, levelling, drainage, seeding and fertilisation to develop a new pitch on the land. This will be followed by a period of approximately 12 months to allow the site to establish and be suitable for sport.
In order to ensure the safety and allow the pitch and the grass to become established, the site will be closed to the public. The site will be unsafe for dogs and dog walking. If it is possible without compromising safety or quality, then areas of the site may be reopened for use.

The contractor for these works is Cleveland Land Services who can be contacted either through their staff team on site or on 01642 488328
The field was originally bought for the village for use as a sports pitch after the construction of the by-pass (opened in 1995) by the Department of Transport. Work is finally progressing as funding has become available as part of the Clubhouse development project
