🚬🧸 Illegal to***co and counterfeit goods seized in coordinated crackdown across Bury

A major day of action on 13 October brought together partners from HMRC, Greater Manchester Police, Immigration Enforcement, Bury Council's Licensing Service and Trading Standards to tackle the sale of illicit to***co, counterfeit goods and other unlawful activity.

Officers visited six premises across Tottington, Ainsworth, Radcliffe, Whitefield and Bury, supported by Wagtail, a specially trained to***co detection dog.

As a result of the operation:
✅ Three premises were found to be selling or storing unlawful goods
✅ 124 packets of illicit ci******es were seized
✅ 18 pouches of hand-rolling to***co were seized
✅ 54 counterfeit or potentially unsafe toys were seized
✅ Goods worth an estimated £3,000 were removed from circulation

This work is part of our ongoing commitment to tackling so-called "dodgy shops" and protecting residents from harmful and illegal products.

Councillor Gavin McGill said: "By removing illicit goods from circulation, we are helping to protect residents, support legitimate businesses and ensure our town centres remain safe, fair and welcoming places to live, work and visit."

Investigations are continuing, and enforcement action will be considered where offences are identified.

Allied Health Professions Day and celebrating those who help residents live independently.

Bury Council marked Allied Health Professions Day on 14 October 2026 by recognising the vital contribution of occupational therapists and the many other allied health professionals who support residents to live healthier, safer and more independent lives.

Working collaboratively across Bury Council, NHS Services and wider community partnerships, allied health professionals play an essential role in helping people overcome challenges, maintain their wellbeing and achieve the outcomes that matter most to them.

Occupational therapists (OTs) are among the professionals making a significant difference to residents across the borough. Working across Children’s and Adult Social Care, Intermediate Care and Housing Services, they support people with disabilities, long-term health conditions, mobility difficulties and changing support needs. By identifying strengths, removing barriers and finding practical solutions, they help people remain independent, achieve personal goals and improve their quality of life.

From devastating floods to stronger protection for Radcliffe and Redvales 💧

The final phase of the £40 million Radcliffe and Redvales flood defence scheme is under way after years of campaigning, partnership working and investment.

The scheme will help protect around 1,000 homes and properties, including communities badly affected by Storm Eva in 2015.

Getting here has taken years of determination and people working together. Bury Council committed £2 million, with a further £3 million from the North West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee. Former Cabinet Member Cllr Alan Quinn, who recently passed the baton to Cllr Lucy Smith for this work, also led a delegation to Parliament in 2018 which helped secure a further £7 million in Government funding, closing a crucial funding gap.

Working with the Environment Agency and other partners, that commitment is now becoming real protection for local people.

Work is under way at Hardy’s Gate Bridge on Dumers Lane, where new flood gates will complete the scheme.

This is what our LET’S Do It! plan is all about: putting relationships first, working together and making things happen for our communities. And we’re doing it.

Bury nurses and community service shortlisted for prestigious awards.

Two nurses employed by the Northern Care Alliance and working as part of Bury Council’s Urgent Community Response Service, Joanne Duxbury and Nicola Crombleholme, have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to community healthcare after being selected to receive the prestigious Queen's Nurse Award.

The service has also been shortlisted for the University of Manchester's External Partner of the Year award. The nomination recognises the service's ongoing commitment to supporting the development of future healthcare professionals through the provision of high-quality placement opportunities for medical students.

Both awards will be presented at separate ceremonies in November.

Flood Action Week is a reminder that preparing for severe weather in advance can help reduce the impact of flooding.

In Bury, we are working with the Environment Agency on a multi-million-pound flood defence scheme. The scheme aims to reduce the flood risk from the River Irwell south of Bury and west of Radcliffe and has seen work completed at Close Park, Morris Street, Dumers Lane and along the section of river from Bury Grammar School to Hinds Weir. The final stage will see flood defence gates introduced at Hardy's Gate Bridge on Dumers Lane. The scheme was developed following a long history of flooding in the area, most notably in 2015 and 2020.

Free half-term activities and healthy meals available for eligible Bury families

Bury families are being encouraged to make the most of an expanded Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme this half term, offering free activities, healthy meals and enriching experiences for eligible children and young people.

The HAF Programme is funded by the UK Government and co-ordinated locally by Bury Council. It supports children and young people who receive benefits-related Free School Meals, helping them stay active, socialise with friends and access nutritious food during the school holidays.

To support families during the holidays, Bury Council has expanded its HAF Programme, creating more opportunities for children and young people to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across the borough.

The programme offers everything from sports, arts and crafts, outdoor activities and wellbeing sessions to opportunities to learn new skills, make friends and have fun in a safe and supportive environment.

People in Whitefield have watched the new Community Fire Station taking shape on Bury New Road and now it’s open.

Firefighters working from modern new facilities built to help keep people safe for years to come.

It's part of a £65m Greater Manchester investment in fire service properties and in Whitefield, that investment has become a better base for the people who respond when residents need them, a more environmentally sustainable building and a station designed to serve both emergency response needs and the wider community.

Local voices were amongst those who helped to shape the new building. Following feedback on the original proposals, the position of the new building was changed within the site.

It was a pleasure for the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Tahir Rafiq, local councillors, council officers, and community partners to be shown around these new facilities by the very people who help keep residents safe.

Working alongside councils, the NHS, police, community groups and other partners, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service plays an important role in helping to keep people safe, support vulnerable residents and build stronger communities.

It is also another visible sign of change in Whitefield.

Last year we adopted a ten-year Town Centre Plan, shaped with local people, setting out how Whitefield can develop and improve.

Some of that change will be led by the council, some by communities and businesses and some – like this – through our Greater Manchester partners.

Keeping people safe, looking after their health and wellbeing, supporting them through difficult times.

Different projects. Different partners. One town – and investment turning into things people can see, use and benefit from.

Congratulations to everyone at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service who has brought the new station to life – and, most importantly, to the crews who will serve Whitefield and the wder community from it.

Official opening celebrates major investment in SEND education

A major investment in specialist education has been completed at Millwood Primary School, creating additional places and state-of-the-art facilities for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Bury.

The £13 million project has delivered a substantial new wing containing seven new classrooms, a multi-use hall, sensory rooms, a rebound room, non-teaching areas, external play spaces and additional car parking. The project has also included repairs to the school's roof and existing building.

The scheme has been funded through capital allocations from the Department for Education which supports local authorities in their duty to provide suitable school placements for children and young people with SEND.

Creating more capacity at Millwood is a key part of Bury Council's plans to strengthen SEND provision across the borough
