It’s National Volunteers Week this week - the perfect time to celebrate our fabulous volunteer team members.

Our team is operated solely by volunteers - a wonderful group of men and women (and of course, our search dogs) who are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Our volunteers have been saving lives across Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire since 1964. Day or night, whatever the weather.

We are funded entirely by donations, and your support enables us to continue our life-saving work.

Congratulations to our newest drone pilot, Rob.

Rob has been training with the drone team for 9 months and successfully completed his theory and practical examinations to fly under the team’s operational authorisation as a pilot for SAR. We are proud of him joining the unit.

Rob said “I wanted to join the drone team because I'm a big believer in cutting edge technology helping people do things in a better way. My day job involves a lot of spatial analysis, and this is something that couples with the drone’s capabilities really well. I'm super excited to now be a fully fledged drone pilot and see where things can go!"

Welcome to the Drone Team, Rob!

Call out: 54
Date: 30th May 2026
Time: 23:27
Location: Castle Naze

Following reports from a local farmer of lights and suspicious activity around the crag, our drone team was called out. After two drone flights and a short foot search, nothing was found, and the team was stood down.

We would like to say a massive 'good luck' to everyone participating in the Great Manchester Run today. We have team members and supporters running the event to raise money for a new stretcher for the team - a critical part of our equipment for helping casualties off the hill.

Team member Fleur is one of the participants running 10K in the Great Manchester Run and she's been training hard. Now, the question is, will she match her personal best or will she 'BEAT IT'?

If you'd like to support the runners (and us) then you can donate using Fleur's link, below.

We’ve had another busy few days this week, with lots of folk outdoors, enjoying the warm weather.

Call out: 51
Date: Tuesday 26th May 2026
Time: 17:45
Location: Hoffman Quarry

Derbyshire Police requested the assistance of our Drone team, following concerns for a missing person who was lost, and without water, in the quarry. We were soon stood down as the missing person was confirmed as found.

Call out: 52
Date: Wednesday 27th May 2026
Time: 12:08
Location: Mam Tor

We were called out to assist Edale Mountain Rescue Team on a call out to a person who had fallen and injured their hip/leg whilst walking on the summit. The casualty was assessed and treated, then carried by stretcher to the road, before onward travel to hospital.

All of our team members are volunteers and many have full time jobs. This means that, especially on weekdays, we can sometimes be low on numbers for callouts, and neighbouring teams will support each other, as was the case here.

Call out: 53
Date: Thursday 28th May 2026
Time: 14:39
Location: The Roaches

A climber had fallen from the crag at The Roaches, and had sustained a possible back injury. The casualty was assessed and treated by Officialwmas, who were on scene, and was then carried by mountain rescue stretcher to the awaiting Helimed helicopter for transfer to hospital.

We wish both casualties a full and speedy recovery.

The team has been kept busy in the sunshine over the last couple of days - the last 24 hours has seen us attend 3 call outs; two on Monday and one today.

Call out: 48
Date: Monday 25th May 2026
Time: 15:25
Location: Rushup Edge

We were called out to assist East Midlands Ambulance Service to help a paraglider on Rushup Edge, who had injured their ankle on landing. After being treated on scene by an EMAS paramedic, they were placed on a mountain rescue stretcher and sledged down to the roadside and waiting ambulance for onward transport to hospital.

Call out: 49
Date: Monday 25th May 2026
Time: 16:45
Location: Wormhill

As team members were returning home from the callout on Rushup Edge, a second callout came in, this time to assist EMAS with a person suffering from the effects of the hot weather. Despite eating and drinking on their walk, the casualty had become exhausted, and although the group subsequently shortened their walk, help was needed.

Team members quickly arrived at the location and assessed the casualty. With encouragement and support, the casualty was able to walk to the waiting ambulance for a fuller assessment.

Team members then returned home to their ice creams and a well-earned cool off.

Call out: 50
Date: Tuesday 26th May 2026
Time: 13:10
Location: Chee Dale

A walker had slipped in one of our accident black spots alongside the River Wye in Chee Dale, had injured their lower leg, and was unable to continue.

Team members made their way to the casualty’s location, and having assessed them, gave pain relief and splinted the limb. The casualty was then transferred to a mountain rescue stretcher. Due to the difficulty of the riverside path, the team made the decision to get their feet wet and walk in the river, therefore avoiding a nasty rock scramble on the path. The patient was taken to Millers Dale car park for onward travel, by the family, to hospital.

We wish all of the casualties a good recovery and a quick return to the outdoors.

Time: 02:13
Location: Glossop

Our drone team were asked to assist Glossop MRT with a search for a vulnerable missing person. Whilst team members were en route, we were notified that the person had been found safe & well, and the team was stood down

Callout: 47
Date: Friday 22nd May 2026
Time: 15:24
Location: Lathkill Dale

A member of a group of two walkers fell and injured themselves, and was unable to continue. As this was a weekday with many team members at work, we asked our colleagues at Edale MRT to assist, to boost numbers.

The casualty was located, treated, and carried by stretcher to the road head, where they were taken to hospital by an awaiting ambulance.

Special thanks go to the owners of Haddon Grove Farm Camp Site and Mill Farm for their assistance and support.

Team members will be marshalling at various points along the route, which starts at the Buxton Opera House, then passes through various parts of our ‘patch’, before finishing in the Pavilion Gardens. We wish all the runners the best of luck.

You can also find us in our usual fundraising spot by the Bull’s Head at Castleton. We’ll be there on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th May, with our merchandise and stall.
