GOOD NEWS THURSDAY

Meet Benny – our four-legged friend who definitely isn’t a fan of thunder! ⛈️💨

Frightened by the storm, poor Benny decided to make a run for it this morning.

While out on the A6, one of our officers spotted him on his unexpected solo adventure.

Not wanting him to come to any harm, the officer opened the passenger door… and Benny didn’t hesitate—he hopped straight in and made himself right at home! 🚓🐶

After enjoying a few hours of VIP treatment at the police station (and soaking up plenty of fuss and attention, of course!), we were able to track down his owners.

We’re delighted to say Benny is now safely back where he belongs—with his family! 🏡❤️

Over the past weekend in the High Peak, 21 vehicles were seized due to dangerous and inconsiderate parking. Several of our beauty spots have been swarmed with poor, inconsiderate parking which has caused danger not only to road users, but to emergency services, who would be unable to get through if needed.
While we want everyone to enjoy visiting the area, we ask that you plan ahead before travelling. Please take the time to research your destination and identify appropriate, designated car parks to ensure your visit is safe and enjoyable for everyone.

# # Busy day yesterday for the team # #

+Local PCSO's began the day at Hope Valley College, delivering assemblies to the entire school on knife crime as part of Operation Sceptre, a national week-long campaign. We have a strong ongoing relationship with the school and have returned today for a lunchtime drop-in session, providing students with an opportunity to engage with officers on a range of topics, including those covered in the assemblies, also they were joined by “Got Your Back” from Derbyshire Victim services.

+Later, the team attended Caroline Court in Hope, a sheltered housing complex for residents aged over 55. Officers spoke with residents about a variety of local and national issues and successfully registered several individuals to Derbyshire Alert, our free community messaging service.

+As officers were leaving this engagement, a report was received from a local resident regarding two suspicious males on a motorbike on Castleton Road, Hope. Fortunately, other officers were also in the area and located the individuals. The males failed to stop, and following a short pursuit, were unfortunately lost in traffic near temporary lights at Sickleholme.

+A few hours later, while on patrol, the team identified five suspicious individuals with a vehicle on Pindale Road, Hope. Following enquiries, a 22-year-old male from the South Yorkshire area was arrested, as he was wanted for several offences, including theft of a vehicle.

+Finally, at about 7pm PC Simpson was alerted to a vehicle entering the Hope Valley via one of the local ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras. The vehicle was located and stopped in Castleton, leading to the arrest of a 26-year-old male from Sheffield, who was wanted for several offences in another force, including r**e.

🚫 Red Lines – Addressing Parking Issues in the Castleton 🚫
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many rural areas experienced a significant increase in visitor numbers. The Hope Valley, particularly Castleton, was no exception. While the area has always welcomed tourism, the volume of visitors rose to levels not previously seen.
This increase has been positive in many respects, supporting local businesses and the wider economy. However, it has also brought challenges. In particular, there has been a substantial rise in vehicles being parked illegally, often due to a disregard for existing parking restrictions.
In response, the local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) convened a multi-agency meeting in May 2024, bringing together the Parish Council and key partners, most notably Derbyshire County Council Highways, to explore practical solutions to address these issues. 🤝 The process has taken approximately two years to progress, requiring sustained effort and strong collaboration from all involved, particularly Castleton Parish Council.
The ongoing problems have included obstruction of roadways, restricted access for emergency services 🚑 and residents, and damage to the local environment 🌿.
The introduction of red line restrictions is therefore a necessary and proportionate measure to better manage parking, improve road safety, and protect the area for both residents and visitors. In addition to the red lines, double yellow lines have been introduced where required, and the existing parking meters along a section of Buxton Road are due to be reinstated.
Work is also ongoing to explore further options, including investment in improving public transport links to make them more accessible and user-friendly for visitors.
I would also like to recognise the support of local farmers and landowners in Castleton and Edale who, where possible, make their fields available for parking 🚜. This contribution makes a significant difference in helping to manage demand and reduce pressure on the village.

👉 If you wish to report any parking issues in these areas, please contact Derbyshire County Council’s Civil Parking Enforcement Team, who are responsible for enforcement.

On Wednesday 13th May, an unexploded ordnance was located by a member of the public at Slippery Stones, Derwent.
A joint agency response involving Severn Trent, Peak Park Rangers, the Bomb Disposal Unit and police was initiated. The ordnance was located by Peak Park Rangers and a safety cordon was put in place whilst officers attended.
The Bomb Disposal Unit identified the device as an allied ordnance dating from between 1945 and 1960. The device was safely destroyed in a controlled explosion at 19:13hrs.
We would like to thank Severn Trent, the Peak Park Rangers and the Bomb Disposal Unit for bringing this incident to a swift conclusion.

| Duo jailed over series of burglaries across High Peak

Two burglars have been jailed for targeting a number of homes and vehicles across the High Peak.

Police received a series of calls relating to seven break-ins across Glossop, Chapel-En-Le-Frith and Whaley Bridge overnight on Tuesday 12 November, 2024.

After forcing their way into the properties, the burglars managed to steal car keys and made off with an Audi and a Mini Cooper during the overnight raid. A woman’s handbag and a backpack was also taken.

Officers launched an investigation and the Mini Cooper was recovered after being found dumped close to Sickleholme Petrol Station in Bamford.

Two men - Renars Darkevics and Daniel McCormick – were also spotted on CCTV entering the petrol station around the same time.

Analysis of phone records shows messages involving Darkevics which read ‘nicked the other day’ and ‘for the Mini I got’, ‘they had CCTV of me and Daniel in (the) petrol station’.

One of the victims said in a statement (in part): “It took me a very long time to feel comfortable in a home that I love.

“Your home should be your safe space and no-one should be able to break into it for their own gain.”

Both were arrested with McCormick giving a no comment interview.

Darkevics remained largely silent during his interview but did admit to being in the petrol station.

Both were charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and admitted the offences.

They were handed the following sentences at Minshull Street Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday 31 March:-

Renars Darkevics (25) of Attleboro Road, Manchester – jailed for five years and three months

Daniel McCormick (22) of no fixed abode - jailed for four years and 10 months

The investigation was led by Derbyshire Constabulary’s Neighbourhood Acquisitive Crime Team (NACT).

Police Constable Melissa Hill said: “They brazenly thought they could break into as many people’s homes and vehicles as they could to reap the financial rewards and remain undetected.

“But we managed to make sure that this was not to be the case and they were brought to justice thanks to the hard-work and dedication of the investigation team, coupled with the support of the victims.

“Burglary can have far-reaching consequences for victims and we take this type of offence very seriously here in Derbyshire.

“The jailing of these two should serve as a warning to other criminals that we simply won’t stand for these kind of offences.”
