Amazing how small changes can make a big difference.

The client receives universal credit, has restricted mobility so able to reach into under counter cupboards and struggling to manage washing up of dishes.

Following an Occupational Therapy Assessment, the following essential adaptations were identified and completed:

Lowering of over counter cupboards, pullouts to be fitted in under counter units.

These adaptations have made the kitchen more accessible and easier to use, helping the client maintain independence at home.

Supporting independence. Improving lives.
Cambs HIA – Here to help where it matters most.

Planning for a time when you may no longer be able to manage your own affairs isn’t easy, and it’s something many people understandably put off. However, making arrangements early can provide valuable peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

Setting up a Power of Attorney (POA) is a straightforward process, particularly if you already know who you would trust to act on your behalf. There are different types of POA to consider, depending on whether you want someone to make decisions about your health and care, your finances, or both.

The GOV.UK website offers clear, step-by-step guidance on Power of Attorney, including how to apply and complete the process. You can find more information and begin your application here:

https://www.gov.uk/make-decisions-for-someone

The Office of the Public Guardian, which is responsible for registering POAs, is also available to offer support and advice if you need help along the way, you can contact them at:

Accessing Benefits

We often receive calls from people who may be missing out on benefits they’re entitled to—support that could also help them qualify for grants to improve or maintain their home.
Finding out what’s available is straightforward. Start with www.GOV.UK for clear, comprehensive guidance. Here’s a quick overview of where to look:

• Citizens Advice: Offers free, confidential advice on benefits—online, over the phone, or at a local office. www.citizensadvice.org.uk

• Jobcentre Plus: Provides information and support for benefits such as Universal Credit and Employment and Support Allowance. www.gov.uk/contact-jobcentre-plus

• Local Council Services: Your council website or office can guide you to benefits and support tailored to your area. www.gov.uk/browse/benefits

Tip: Combine online research with local support services to ensure you’re accessing all the help available—whether for financial, housing, or health needs.

Tracey, Mark and Frances met with PECT in Peterborough today to talk through our services and how we could collaborate more to improve the energy efficiency and adaptation needs of our shared clients.

This great service [PECT] helps people to resolve issues with fuel poverty, gives energy advice and improves the energy efficiency of homes along with other great services including educational activity.

Our thanks to them for hosting us today.

We helped this client replace old windows and doors under the Special Purpose Grant.

Here’s what they had to say:

“I just wanted to say a massive thank you to both of you for arranging the replacement of my windows and doors for me. From the point of meeting the caseworker, to the communication, scheduling and then fitting of the windows and doors was all excellent. The contractors who came to do the work were really nice and professional and did such a great job. The windows have made such a significant difference to the warmth in the bungalow. I am very grateful indeed”.

As part of our commitment to improve environmental efficiency, new windows help to reduce heat loss and improve ventilation as well as making a home look and feel cleaner, safer and more presentable.

Helping people stay in good health for longer.

Adaptations to a PARK HOME this time. A new level access shower, with blue tiles for a change and a low threshold door.

We complete a few adaptations in park homes each year, usually to improve access and sometimes adapting the bathroom.

Adapting mobile homes requires more careful consideration than traditional brick built homes as drainage is different, space limited and we have to think about the impact of weight on the structure.

Another example of how DFG's help to fund people in different tenures.

“Better Outcomes for Children”

Cambs HIA recently funded the installation of padded wall for a child diagnosed with autism who demonstrates self-injurious and challenging behaviour.

Cambs HIA installs a few of these each year and they help prevent harm to the child and damage to the property. These walls come in a variety of colours.

This adaptation helps create a safer, more supportive environment, reducing the risk of injury and giving peace of mind to the family.

If you or someone you support could benefit from home adaptations, contact Cambs HIA today to find out how we can help improve safety and independence at home.
