🚀 Could nuclear power cut the journey to Mars in half?
New insights from ARU explore how is investing in nuclear propulsion to revolutionise space travel - potentially reducing the trip to Mars from over six months to just three or four.

By generating far more energy than traditional chemical rockets, nuclear technology could make missions faster, safer, and more efficient, while helping protect astronauts from prolonged exposure to cosmic radiation.

With a nuclear-powered mission already planned for later this decade, the future of deep space exploration could be nearer than we think… 🌌

From playful “paw-trait” art to performance pieces, the 2026 Graduate Showcase is not to be missed!

The free public exhibition, opening on Thursday, 4 June, brings together projects by students from more than a dozen different creative courses.

Olena Konstantinova (right of image)👇

“After abruptly leaving Ukraine back in 2022 and moving to the UK, I felt lost and had no idea what to do next, what to do with my future. This course gave me confidence in my work and hope that I can do what I love doing for work.

“I want to make people smile with my artwork – for it to be something fun to engage with and brighten their day. The best feedback I can get is seeing people smile and laugh while engaging with my work.”

Natalia Rodriguez Romero (left of image)👇

“I am interested in the ‘husk’ – the brittle architecture we build to survive, which eventually becomes the very thing that stifles our growth.

“This project is an invitation to witness the moment protection becomes a prison, and the terrifying, beautiful effort required to break free from one’s own calcified history.”

The Graduate Showcase runs from 4-13 June at ARU’s Cambridge campus on East Road. The Ruskin Gallery and surrounding studios are open from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday, and 10am-2pm on Saturday

to share the success of Dr Christopher Owen.

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating Christopher’s journey of leadership, courage and meaningful change. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Christopher’s work is closely rooted in his identity and values. His work highlights the power of visibility and authenticity, not only in achieving personal success, but in helping to create inclusive spaces where others can thrive.

June is Pride Month, an opportunity to recognise the influence and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community.

We’re proud to highlight the story of Dr Christopher Owen, an ARU PhD graduate whose work explores systemic oppression and intersectionality through English literature. His research shines a light on how cultural narratives can both reinforce inequalities—such as racism, sexism and ableism—and act as powerful tools for change.

Christopher went on to found Coliberate, a social enterprise focused on driving long-term, meaningful change.

His journey is one of leadership, courage and innovation—from his time at ARU to leading national conversations and campaigns for justice.

Stories like Christopher’s show the incredible impact our alumni can have on society 🌍✨

🌟ARU part of £1.4m drive to boost healthcare in East

ARU’s School of Medicine is set to play a major role in improving healthcare across the East of England, thanks to new funding from the Medical Research Council. Nearly £10 million is being invested in clinical research careers across the UK, with £1.4 million supporting work in our region.

The programme brings together ARU, the University of Cambridge, the University of East Anglia, the Quadram Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute, alongside NHS and care partners. The aim is simple but powerful: help deliver faster, better treatments for patients and strengthen research in areas that haven’t historically received as much investment.

Dr Jo‑Anne Johnson, Head of Undergraduate Medicine at ARU, highlighted how this work can help improve patient outcomes and reduce health inequalities across the region.

The Eastern programme is part of a wider UK scheme supporting almost 200 frontline clinicians, including doctors, nurses and therapists, to carry out vital research alongside their day jobs. The initiative will establish 10 Regional Accounts for Clinical Researchers, bringing together more than 50 research organisations and over 60 NHS organisations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

🐟 Can fish oil boost your workouts?

Most people know omega‑3s are good for heart health, but research shows they can also help your muscles recover and perform better.

ARU’s Professor Justin Roberts and the University of Greenwich’s Professor Fernando Naclerio explain how omega‑3 fatty acids support muscle repair, reduce inflammation, and improve strength gains over time.

From better blood flow to faster recovery, these “friendly fats” could be the missing link between training and adaptation.
