Dear Delegates, Chairs and Faculty Advisors,
We are reaching out today with unfortunate news. It deeply saddens us to inform you that the upcoming edition of the Cambridge University Model United Nations conference has been cancelled. Despite every effort being made over the past few months to plan a corona-proof conference, in recent days a number of Cambridge Colleges have informed us that they have had to cancel our committee room bookings, as they are no longer permitting any external events this year. Having subsequently reached out to a number of alternative venues, we have come to the melancholy conclusion that there is simply not enough conferencing capacity within Cambridge to run CUIMUN safely and effectively this year. We had stringent plans in place to ensure effective social distancing between Delegates and Chairs, however, this mandated acquiring larger than usual committee rooms – the supply of which is now insufficient to host an event of CUIMUN’s scale. We hope that you can understand the unfortunate nature of these developments that are out of our hands, and in placing the health, security, and travel of the CUIMUN community above all else, it is not possible for us to continue with the conference this November.
We do not take this situation lightly and understand the stress and inconvenience that this may cause many of you. Hence, we are committed to providing you all with a full refund, and will shortly be in contact again with respect to the details of this. We appreciate that your delegations have put in hours of hard work and enthusiasm, and it sincerely saddens us to know that your efforts will not be met with the running of an excellent conference that you all so clearly deserve. Our Chairs and Secretariat have also put in countless hours of work on the logistics, committees, and delegate experience, and we are deeply saddened knowing that they will not come to fruition. We are incredibly proud of all the work that everyone has put in to make this conference a reality and a success, and the silver lining is that we can now ensure it will come to fruition and achieve even higher standards than we originally aimed for, given an extra year of planning and refinement.
More than anything, we know that next year and in the years to come, this conference will continue to have a positive impact upon young people from around the world by bringing diverse ideologies, cultures, and interests together for the most incredible week of every year.
Sincerely yours,
CUIMUN XXVI
