We’re looking for three new Trustees to join us and help provide strategic direction for nature across our three counties.

You don’t need to be a wildlife expert or have years of experience, just a passion for nature, an open mind, and a desire to make a difference. 💚

We’re particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in fundraising/membership, farming, agronomy or land management, although one of our Trustee roles is open to people from any background.

🥳Our Nene Wetlands visitor centre is getting an upgrade.

🙌The building at the Rushden Lakes shopping centre will close at the end of the month while it gets a refit and will reopen with new classroom facilities and exhibits that will provide a more engaging experience for visitors. We will be refocusing our engagement work in Northamptonshire to help us reach more people so we will be closing our visitor centre at Summer Leys.

🌿🐝 Ellen, our Wilder Communities Officer recently visited Countryview Nursing Home near Kettering, where residents have been working with Adam from the KNG to make their grounds more wildlife-friendly.

Together, they’ve been creating habitat boxes and enjoying sessions in the garden, activities that have brought so much joy and purpose, helping residents reconnect with happy memories of nature and the outdoors. 💚

Their latest creation is a fantastic ‘Bugcote’, originally planned as a dovecote, but with the residents’ imaginations, it evolved into something even more special!

She was delighted to present them with a Wildlife Gardening Award to recognise all their hard work for wildlife. The residents were thrilled and are looking forward to proudly displaying their certificate and plaque. 🏆🌱

Lovely to see St Neots MP Ian Sollom recently. He visited our Cambourne HQ to hear about some of the pressing issues facing the environment from our senior staff and also got a grilling from some of our Youth Rangers who asked him what Government can do to protect species better and encourage more young people to get outside into nature.

🌳 Last week I visited the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northants, based in Great Cambourne, where I met some of the team, as well as three young people on work experience.

🐝 I am always impressed with the knowledge and passion the Trust has for our environment and wildlife. It is part of a national network which is working to ensure at least 30 per cent of our land and sea is protected to help nature and wildlife recover by 2030. This ties in with calls from the Lib Dems for the Government to set targets to double the size of the Protected Area Network, which aims to conserve natural habitats, maintain biodiversity and protect threatened or endangered species.

🏠 I talked to CEO Brian Eversham and Conservation Director Matt Jackson about several topics including concerns around changes to planning regulations which will loosen requirements around biodiversity and the need for this to be maintained in new development areas of Cambourne, as it currently is in the town. And this is something the Lib Dems support with our call to map out the areas that are most important for nature and climate and extend planning protection and investment to them.

💧 Brian and Matt also spoke about concerns around water loss in the surrounding Fens and the implication of the wildfires, something the Lib Dems are also concerned about, as well as the quality and quantity of water related to the likely new town to be built in Tempsford.

🔎 It was also great to meet Becca from the Communities and Education Team, who helps run a number of activities including the Youth Rangers Group with monthly activities for 11–17-year-olds in Cambourne and Trumpington. They do walks, carry out surveys and look at the habitat and how it can be supported.

🌿 I will continue to support the Wildlife Trust and raise its concerns with the Government to help protect our local nature and environment.

☢️❌This is the sight that met one of our reserve officers at our Fancott Wood and Meadows nature reserve in Bedfordshire at the weekend.

Protecting these special sites for nature and people is already a challenge, but flytipping and other antisocial behaviour makes the job even tougher.

If you are hiring someone to take away waste please ensure they are genuine.
