Why do you come to work?💭

This is a question we ask our team members regularly. Here's Tim from our Finance Team, and his 'why:'

🫶Teamwork: Genuine friendships, mutual respect, and an appreciation for everyone's strengths - creating a well rounded team dynamic.

💜Valued: Feeling seen, heard, and recognised - for both his work and his values - has been a real and consistent part of Tim's experience at Jimmy's.

✊A movement: Working at Jimmy's feels like a full circle moment for Tim. From advocacy to upskilling, our shared goal is clear: to end homelessness in Cambridge. To work at Jimmy's means to be part of a larger movement.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦People: Working with vulnerable individuals is not easy, but the impact of our work shows up in unexpected ways. For Tim, it was a recent email confirming a grant had been awarded, which allowed a resident to buy furniture for their new home. From Street Floor to Front Door - everyone played their part.

The work we do at Jimmy's is not only important, it's a lifeline for those who need us, and we will always be here to support people who rely on our services. Thank you Tim for sharing your 'why' - we appreciate you.💜

Last week, during their 'Social Action' week, we had students from Hills Road Sixth Form College fundraising on behalf of Jimmy's.

From chocolate covered strawberries🍓 to a basketball competition on Parkers Piece🏀, and even an overnight walk🌙 - we are so grateful to have been chosen by multiple groups of students who wanted to fundraise and make a difference for people experiencing homelessness in Cambridge.

Thank you to every student who gave their time and energy into planning and running these fundraising activities - and to Hills Road for making space for young people to take action in the community.💜

You might not expect to find us referencing a Eurovision winner on a Tuesday morning. But sometimes a song and its lyrics find you and stops you in your tracks...🎵

"Neighbours say we're trouble"

"You threw me down but I'm gonna fly"

"I will rise like a Phoenix"

Conchita Wurst wrote this song as an anthem of defiance. A song about rising up, succeeding, and proving anyone who ever doubted her wrong.

That's a story we know well. People who have been labelled as 'trouble.' Judged. Written off. People who despite that are still here, fighting and rebuilding.💜

They say music is the universal language. Sometimes it says exactly what we didn't know we needed to hear - you just have to listen.👂🎵

Is there a particular lyric or song that has made you stop and think? Let us know!👇

☀️The UK Health Security Agency issued an Amber heat-health alert for our region this week - so we wanted to take a moment to talk about what this weather means for people without a roof over their heads.

When we think about rough sleeping and dangerous weather, our minds tend to go straight to winter. However, extreme heat carries very real risks for people who are rough sleeping. These dangers can include:

🌡️Heat exhaustion and heatstroke
💧Dehydration
🔥Sunburn and skin damage

We take for granted the basic things that help us cope - a cold shower, an air conditioned space, a fridge to store cold drinks. For the most part we can escape the heat, but for someone sleeping rough - that's simply not an option.

If you see someone sleeping rough out in the sun, remember that small gestures have a huge impact. Whether that's a cold bottle of water, suncream, a snack, or even a simple "are you ok?" goes a long way - let's look after each other this summer.💜

Did you know Jimmy's is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year - including today?🤯

While many of us are enjoying a long weekend in the sun, our team are here around the clock, showing up for those who need us.💜

Rough sleeping doesn't take a day off, and neither do we - even when the sun is shining.🌞

Words are powerful, and they carry weight - in Scrabble and in life.

The language we use around rough sleeping matters - because it shapes how people are seen, how they feel about themselves, and how they are treated.

At Jimmy's, we believe in choosing words that build people up, because every person that comes through our doors deserves to be met with kindness, acceptance and no judgement.💜

Today we're shouting out some of our amazing volunteers from the Gates Cambridge - where a group of postgraduate students came in and cooked up a storm in our kitchen, preparing the evening meal (and a delicious Victoria Sponge!) for our residents, as part of their 'Day of Service.'👩‍🍳🍽️

Evenings like this make a real difference - and it's a reminder that being kind and showing up go a long way. Thank you to the volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and filled some bellies!💜

We take our training very seriously, but when the sun made an appearance, we decided take our learnings outside!🌞

From unconscious bias to fire warden training, we're committed to making sure our teams have the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to provide the best support possible to the people we work with.💜

A huge thank you to everyone involved in delivering and taking part in the training - and for making the most of the sunshine whilst doing so!

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and this year's theme is action.👊

Poor mental health and homelessness are deeply connected. It's a cycle that's hard to break - but every day, our teams are taking action and working to break that cycle. From tailored 1-2-1 support and financial planning, to activities that help people recover and rebuild - we're with our residents every step of the way.💜

We are also proud to be the only charity in the homelessness / housing sector offering TRiM training to our staff - ensuring that our teams are supported through any traumatic experiences they might face in our line of work.

Watch to see just some of the many statistics linking mental health and homelessness in the UK - and let us know in the comments: what does action look like to you?👇
