3,687 accidental house fires in Scotland last year.
Most could have been prevented.

That’s why the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is offering FREE Home Fire Safety Visits — quick, friendly visits that give you practical, potentially life saving advice.

Who’s most at risk?
• Older adults
• People with mobility, sensory or memory challenges
• Anyone affected by alcohol, drugs or smoking
• Homes with high levels of clutter
• People who smoke while using medical oxygen or emollients

Being smart about your v**e starts with knowing the facts – and understanding how to keep yourself and others safe.

You should:

✅ Unplug your v**e once it’s fully charged
✅Recycle it safely at a designated recycle point near you: a supermarket, v**e shop or council site.
🚫 Keep it away from extreme heat or freezing cold temperatures

If you don’t, you could cause your v**e to overheat, leak, or even start a fire.

Changing these small habits can make a big difference.

If you smoke, it is always safer to smoke outside. There’s no risk of a dropped cigarette or burning cigarette end starting a fire in your home and you also remove the health risk of secondary smoke for anyone else in your home. If you can’t easily go outside, then standing up at an open window or outside door is the next best option.

📱Rechargeable batteries are found in lots of household items such as mobile phones, laptops, e-bikes and e-scooters.

Think about where your device is plugged in. If a battery catches fire it could block your escape route.

And don't recharge while you are asleep.

As with all fires - get out, stay out and call 999.
