Inflatables are great for the pool, but they’re not safe for the sea.

Even in light winds, they can quickly drift you out to sea and put you in danger.

If you’re heading to the beach this bank holiday, leave inflatables at home and save them for the pool instead.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

☀️With temperatures expected to be warming up over the next few days we expect to see a lot of people heading to the beach. ☀️

🌊Please remember that the sea is still cold with temperatures in the water of around a chilly 12c. If you intend to take to the water on any type of water equipment let someone know when you’re going and when you expect to be back. Always wear a buoyancy vest and take either a vhf radio or phone in a waterproof pouch with you incase you need to contact someone for help. We do not recommend the use of any inflatables on the sea, wind direction can change quickly and inflatables can very quickly be blown offshore and out to sea.
Always be aware of tide times and any sea currents .

🧑‍🧒‍🧒If you are taking young children to the beach, keep an eye on them as beaches soon become busy and it’s easy for them to get lost in crowded beaches.

🍺🥂 Remember that alcohol and swimming do not mix, stay sober and stay safe .

Most importantly, enjoy the sunshine but be sensible and stay safe .
🚨If you do see anyone in trouble at anytime on the beach or in the sea, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard 🚨

Tombstoning isn’t worth the risk 🚫

Jumping or diving from piers, cliffs, jetties, or bridges can cause serious injury or be fatal.

Submerged rocks, shallow water and strong currents aren’t always visible. Once you’re in the water, getting out can be difficult.

Instead, choose a registered coasteering provider, where you’ll have the right training and equipment for a safe, enjoyable experience ✅

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

In a coastal emergency, minutes matter. Could you tell someone exactly where you are if you or a loved one needed help?

When you call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, one of the first questions you’ll be asked is: “where are you?”. The moment you provide this information; the teams will dispatch the most appropriate responders. We have world-class systems to help us, but valuable time can be saved if you can give some location details.

There are very simple ways, as well as more advanced options, to help you stay safe and know your location.

• Before you leave: Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

• Safety signs and location: Look for local safety signs depicting beach names and location references. Take a picture of local landmarks such as car park names and buildings.

• Location apps: Know how to use your location apps. Many smartphones now have a Global Positioning System (GPS) installed which pinpoints geographical locations.

• Mobile phone: Make sure your mobile is fully charged, ideally in a waterproof case. It’s also worth taking a power pack so you can recharge your phone, especially if your activities involve heavy battery use.

If you can tell us exactly where you are, rescuers can be sent more quickly. It could save a life.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

This weekend, Shoreham Coastguard hosted the Area 8 Flood Rescue Team for a two-day exercise, featuring a simulated night operation alongside technique familiarisation and CPD. The training ensured our MOD 3 Volunteers remain fully prepared and ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

We would like to thank West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service for delivering training and presentations that enhanced the team’s capability to respond to incidents involving vehicles in water.

Merry Christmas to all our followers. This morning started early for volunteer officers from Littlehampton and Shoreham with a call to reports of a person in the water.

Thankfully we believe this may have been a false alarm and after investigations along with Sussex Police we were able to stand down to return to unwrapping presents.

We hope you won't need us but Coastguards are on call over Christmas, just like any other day of the year. The team are prepared to drop everything at a moment's notice, leave their families and loved ones, their jobs or whatever they're doing to respond to the sound of their pagers whether it's Christmas or not. We are on call 24/7 365 days of the year!

Wishing you all a very Happy and Safe Christmas.
