84 years ago today 614 Squadron took part in the Dieppe raid, laying smokescreens for the invasion forces. We suffered our first combat casualties when FS George Gifkins and Sgt William Johnson were killed. For his bravery in leading a flight of Blenheims (one of these from our squadron is pictured) and attempting to da Sgt Johnson’s life by pulling one of him from their burning bomber after it crash-landed, their pilot, Flt Lt John Scott was awarded the DFC.

84 mlynedd yn ôl heddiw cymerodd Sgwadron 614 ran yn y cyrch ar Dieppe, gan osod sgriniau mwg i'r lluoedd goresgyn.

On this day in 1940 the first of our fallen in the Second World War were killed. Flight Lieutenant Norman Merrett and Flying Officer James Harper died when their Lysander collided with another while on manoeuvres near Montrose. Flt Lt Merrett is buried at St Michael’s church in the Vale of Glamorgan where our Squadron Association Standard is lodged today. Fg Off Harper is buried at his home town of Renfrew in Scotland.

Ar y diwrnod hwn ym 1940 lladdwyd y cyntaf o’n milwyr a syrthiodd yn yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Bu farw’r Is-gapten Hedfan Norman Merrett a’r Swyddog Hedfan James Harper pan wrthdarodd eu Lysander ag un arall tra ar symudiadau ger Montrose. Mae’r Is-gapten Hedfan Merrett wedi’i gladdu yn eglwys Sant Mihangel ym Mro Morganwg lle mae ein Safon Gymdeithas Sgwadron wedi’i lleoli heddiw. Mae’r Is-gapten Hedfan Harper wedi’i gladdu yn ei dref enedigol, Renfrew, yn yr Alban.

Today in 1944, 614 Squadron suffered one of our greatest ever losses when seven of our aircrew were killed during an attack on Romanian oilfields providing most of the fuel for N**i Germany.

We’re very proud that one our reservists serving in Romania today went to the war cemetery in the capital, Bucharest to honour those comrades from his squadron who were killed 82 years ago.

AS1 Jon Bridge is a Driver with 614 Squadron and was mobilised from his civilian job as an HGV Driver with Pickfords to serve with 121 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) at the 86th Air Base Borcea as the RAF led NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission on the Alliance’s eastern flank.

AS1 Bridge organised a visit to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Bucharest War Cemetery where those seven aircrew are buried.

In wartime, 614 Squadron flew many raids against targets in Romania and the Balkans from their base in Italy, including the vital refineries at Ploesti – whose oil kept the N**i war machine moving. We were then operating in the highly specialised Pathfinder role - the only RAF squadron to do so outside the UK.

The targets near the capital Bucharest were among the most heavily defended in Europe and bomber crews paid a heavy price. The raid on 9 August 1944 against the Romana-Americana refinery was particularly costly and the seven of our aircrew killed when two of our Halifax aircraft (JP110 ‘I-Item’ and JP282 ‘Q-Queenie’) were shot down were: pilot, Flt Lt Robert Douglas Langton; navigators, WO Harry Bath and Fg Off Thomas Joseph Rogerson Turner; flight engineer, FS Herbert George Jones; tail gunner, FS John William Clarke and bomb-aimers, FS Peter Brunton and Plt Off Walter Joseph Martyn. Six crew from these two aircraft survived and were captured by the enemy and were held as prisoners of war, as were four aircrew of a further 614 Squadron Halifax who bailed out of their damaged aircraft but which limped home to Italy.

AS1 Bridge, who laid a wreath and poppy crosses at their graves said, 'I'm proud to be here serving in Romania and to be able to pay tribute in Bucharest to fellow members of 614 Squadron from the war. It was emotional seeing the seven graves here and to think about their service and their sacrifice. It's something that I'll never forget and I'm grateful to everyone on 121 EAW and 614 Squadron who helped make this event happen.'

Officer Commanding 614 Squadron, Wg Cdr Lee Matthews said, 'I'm delighted that one of the Squadron’s aviators used his spare time to organise such an important visit, while enlisting the support of EAW personnel to help him, despite being on busy operational deployment. It was especially poignant coming on the back of our visit to the CWGC Bari War Cemetery in Italy in March when we visited ten graves of Squadron members who lost their lives in the same campaign'.

Heddiw yn 1944, profodd 614 Sgwadron un o'n colledion mwyaf erioed pan laddwyd saith o'n aelodau awyr wrth ymosodiad ar gaeau olew Rwmania roedd yn darparu'r rhan fwyaf o'r tanwydd i'r Almaen N**i.
Rydym yn falch iawn bod un o'n gwarchodwyr yn gwasanaethu yn Rwmania heddiw wedi mynd i'r fynwent rhyfel yn y brifddinas, Bucharest, i anrhydeddu'r cyd-aelodau o'i sgwadron a gafodd eu lladd 82 o flynyddoedd yn ôl.
AS1 Jon Bridge, yn yrrwr gyda 614 Sgwadron, a gafodd ei symud o'i swydd sifil fel Gyrrwr HGV gyda Pickfords i wasanaethu gyda 121 Adain Awyr Ymgyrchol (EAW) yn 86 Base Awyr Borcea wrth i'r RAF arwain Cenhadaeth Gwella Heddlu Awyr NATO ar floc dwyrain y Cynghrair.

Trefnodd AS1 Bridge ymweliad â Mynwent Rhyfel Pwyllgor Mynwentydd y Gymanwlad (CWGC) yn Bucharest lle mae'r saith aelod awyr hynny wedi eu claddu.
Yn ystod y rhyfel, hedfanodd 614 Sgwadron lawer o ymosodiadau ar dargedau yn y Balcanau a Rwmania o'u sylfaen yn yr Eidal, gan gynnwys y cyfleusterau distyllfa bwysig yn Ploesti – a gadwodd olew y peiriant rhyfel N**i yn symud. Roeddem ni wedyn yn gweithredu yn y rôl Pathfinder uwchbenedig - yr unig awyrlu RAF i wneud hynny y tu allan i'r DU. Roedd y targedau ger y brifddinas Bucharest ymhlith y rhai mwyaf diogelu yn Ewrop ac roedd criwiau bomio'n talu pris uchel. Roedd y mosg ar 9 Awst 1944 yn arbennig o ddrud ac roedd y saith o'n criw awyr wedi'u lladd pan gafodd dau o'u heiddo Halifax eu saethu i lawr, sef y pilot, Flt Lt Robert Douglas Langton; llywiwr, WO Harry Bath a Fg Off Thomas Joseph Rogerson Turner; peiriannwr hedfan, FS Herbert George Jones; tanio craidd, FS John William Clarke a chwblhawyr bomiau, FS Peter Brunton a Plt Off Walter Joseph Martyn. Fe oroesodd chwech o'r criw o'r ddau awyren hyn a gaeth eu cipio gan y gelyn, gan dreulio gweddill y rhyfel fel carcharorion rhyfel, fel yr oedd chwech o griw awyr 614 Squadron Halifax arall a groesodd o'u heiddo wedi'i niweidio ond a adawyd i'r cartref i'r Eidal.

Dywedodd AS1 Bridge, a osododd gylch blodeuog a groesau popi ar eu beddau, 'Rwy'n falch o fod yma'n gwasanaethu. ym Rwmania ac i allu talu teyrnged yn Bucharest i gyd-aelodau o 614 Sgwadron a fu’n rhan o’r rhyfel. Roedd hi’n deimladwy gweld y saith bedd fan hyn a meddwl am eu gwasanaeth a’u aberth. Mae’n rhywbeth na fyddaf byth yn ei anghofio ac rwy’n ddiolchgar i bawb yn 121 EAW a 614 Sgwadron a helpu i wneud y digwyddiad hwn yn bosibl.'

Dywedodd Swyddog Gorchymyn 614 Sgwadron, Wg Cdr Lee Matthews, 'Mae’n bleser gen i fod un o heidiodd y Sgwadron wedi defnyddio ei amser hamdden i drefnu ymweliad mor bwysig, tra’n cael cymorth gan staff EAW i’w helpu, er gwaethaf bod ar ddyletswydd weithredol brysur. Roedd yn arbennig o symudol wedi ein hymweliad â Maes Beddau Rhyfel CWGC Bari yn yr Eidal ym mis Mawrth, pan ymwelwyd â deng bedd o aelodau’r Sgwadron a gollodd eu bywydau yn yr un ymgyrch'.

What a great weekend it’s been in Swansea for the Wales Airshow. It was wonderful to meet so many fab people including Cadets of No3 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets and of course, Pontypridd’s very own Flt Lt Tom Nation of the RAF Typhoon Display Team. The Typhoon display was fantastic, as was the RAF Tutor Display Team! See you next year!

Am benwythnos gwych y bu yn Abertawe ar gyfer Sioe Awyr Cymru. Roedd yn hyfryd cwrdd â chymaint o bobl wych gan gynnwys Cadetiaid Asgell Rhif 3 ac wrth gwrs, Flt Lt Tom Nation o Dîm Arddangos Typhoon Pontypridd. Roedd arddangosfa Typhoon yn wych, fel yr oedd Arddangosfa Tiwtoriaid yr RAF! Hwyl fawr i chi y flwyddyn nesaf!

Welsh Typhoon display pilot and former Air Cadet, Flt Lt Tom Nation met some of today’s Welsh Air Cadets at the Wales Airshow this weekend.

One of the pilots taking to the skies over Swansea with his callsign, DRAGON01, Tom was born and raised in Pontypridd and joined 1004 Pontypridd Squadron, ATC when he was 13 and learned to fly with 634 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, where he became a Gliding Instructor at the age of 16.

He said: ‘It’s a huge privilege be this year’s display pilot and to get to fly at my home show. I’ve watched flying displays for as long as I can remember, including at the Wales Airshow. Flying over South Wales is where it all began for me, so it’s really special for me to get to display here. Hopefully there will be someone watching the display who gets inspired in the same way I did.’

Tom is pictured with Air Cadets of No3 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets.

Cyfarfu peilot arddangos Typhoon Cymru a chyn Gadet Awyr, Flt Lt Tom Nation â rhai o Gadetiaid Awyr Cymru heddiw yn Sioe Awyr Cymru y penwythnos hwn.

Un o'r peilotiaid sy'n esgyn i'r awyr uwchben Abertawe gyda'i arwydd galw, DRAGON01, cafodd Tom ei eni a'i fagu ym Mhontypridd ac ymunodd â Chadetiaid Awyr Sgwadron 1004 pan oedd yn 13 oed a dysgodd hedfan gyda Sgwadron Gleidio Gwirfoddol 634, lle daeth yn Hyfforddwr Gleidio yn 16 oed.

Dywedodd: 'Mae'n fraint enfawr bod yn beilot arddangos eleni a chael hedfan yn fy sioe gartref. Rwyf wedi gwylio arddangosfeydd hedfan cyhyd ag y gallaf gofio, gan gynnwys yn Sioe Awyr Cymru. Hedfan dros Dde Cymru yw lle dechreuodd y cyfan i mi, felly mae'n arbennig iawn i mi gael arddangos yma. Gobeithio y bydd rhywun yn gwylio'r arddangosfa a fydd yn cael ei ysbrydoli yn yr un ffordd ag y gwnes i.'

Mae Tom yn y llun gyda Chadetiaid Awyr Asgell Cymru Rhif 3.

Armed Forces week was very busy for 614 Sqn with many events giving us the chance to tell the people of Wales what their RAF Reserve squadron does in supporting RAF operations. However, one event looked to our past and was particularly poignant.

Cpls Gareth Sutton and Phil Cotterell attended the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Annual Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum where a memorial stone was unveiled in honour of our former Officer Commanding, Sqn Ldr William Irving. The Cwmbran man served with the squadron in the Second World War undertaking many hazardous missions. After being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, he became our Officer Commanding when 614 Sqn returned to Wales at RAF Llandow after the war in 1946. He tragically lost his life in the Llandow air disaster in 1950, when he and 79 other rugby fans and crew died when they crashed coming in to land at Llandow on their way back from watching Wales play Ireland.

After a service in the Arboretum chapel, those attending the event made their way to the RAuxAF monument to lay wreaths and crosses. Cpl Sutton said, ‘It was an honour for me to lay a cross of remembrance as we collectively remembered Sqn Ldr Irving. This was made more poignant following the tributes paid to him at the service.’

Roedd wythnos y Lluoedd Arfog yn brysur iawn i Sgwadron 614 gyda llawer o ddigwyddiadau yn rhoi cyfle i ni ddweud wrth bobl Cymru beth mae eu sgwadron Wrth Gefn RAF yn ei wneud i gefnogi gweithrediadau'r RAF. Ond roedd un digwyddiad yn edrych ar ein gorffennol ac yn arbennig o deimladwy.

Mynychodd y Corporaliaid Gareth Sutton a Phil Cotterell Wasanaeth Coffa Blynyddol y Llu Awyr Cynorthwyol Brenhinol yn yr Arboretwm Cenedlaethol lle datgelwyd carreg goffa er anrhydedd i'n cyn-Swyddog Rheoli, yr Sqn Ldr Irving. Gwasanaethodd y dyn o Gwmbran gyda'r sgwadron yn yr Ail Ryfel Byd gan ymgymryd â llawer o deithiau peryglus. Ar ôl cael ei ddyfarnu â'r Groes Hedfan Nodedig, daeth yn Swyddog Rheoli i ni pan ddychwelodd Sgwadron 614 i Gymru yn RAF Llandŵ ar ôl y rhyfel ym 1946. Collodd ei fywyd yn drasig yn nhrychineb awyr Llandŵ ym 1950, pan fu farw ef a 79 o gefnogwyr rygbi a chriw eraill pan wnaethon nhw gwympo wrth lanio yn Llandŵ ar eu ffordd yn ôl o wylio Cymru yn chwarae yn erbyn Iwerddon.

Ar ôl gwasanaeth yng nghapel yr Arboretwm, aeth y rhai a fynychodd y digwyddiad i gofeb RAuxAF i osod torchau a chroesau. Dywedodd y Cpl Sutton, ‘Roedd yn anrhydedd i mi osod croes goffa wrth i ni gofio ar y cyd am Sqn Ldr Irving. Gwnaed hyn yn fwy teimladwy yn dilyn y teyrngedau a roddwyd i Sqn Ldr Irving yn y gwasanaeth.’
