Mastering the virtual waves 🌊 personnel develop their maritime skills using state-of-the-art technology.

Exciting and fun to operate, the Virtual Battle Space (VBS4) realistic and immersive scenarios ensures that it’s a huge hit with our sailors, as well as being a great training asset.
The scenarios use real life environmental factors, such as time of day, sea conditions and weather factors. VBS4 ensures personnel are engaged in realistic night navigation and challenging maritime operations and provides a safe platform for personnel to make decisions without real world risks.

LH Jaroslav Klusevich a network engineer by trade, is at the helm of delivering the VBS4 scenario based training within the Unit.

He said, “The platform is really exciting and it’s great to see students so engaged and active in their learning. Working on the VBS4 system has opened doors for my own professional development and I know that the skills and responsibilities I’ve gained through this role played a part in my promotion to Leading Hand.”

Recognising Jaroslav’s achievements, Lt Cdr Graham Blick, HMS Cambria’s Operations Officer, praised his dedication, stating, ‘’’Jaroslav has truly excelled. His hard work has not only been recognised with a well deserved promotion, but his implementation of the platform has benefited everyone in the Unit. We’ve recently upgraded to the latest VBS4 release, and he is now enhancing the Bridge Simulator with Blue IG technology, taking our training to an unprecedented level of realism.”

The future of Maritime Reserve training is exciting and it’s more immersive than ever!

HMS Cambria personnel mark the 81st anniversary of VE Day at parade in Swansea.

During WW2, Swansea was a strategic target due to its port and oil refinery. The City was attacked over 40 times, resulting in 384 people being killed and 859 injured.

The most devastating attack, known as the Three Night Blitz was in Feb 1941, killing 230 people and completely destroyed the town centre.

OiC WO2 Simon Bick said, ‘It was great to attend today’s parade and honour the Lead: Fight: Win resolve of all those involved in our victory in WW2. It is really important that we and thank all those involved in securing our country’s freedom - Diolch!’

Fancy learning to drive a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB)?

Our RYA Instructor, PO Liv Quinn is excited to fly the white ensign around and use her seamanship skills gained in the RNR and as a Penarth crew member to train Reservists to drive our RHIB.

The latest addition to HMS Cambria’s Permanent Staff team, Liv is an active Reservist and has recently returned from sea-time on HMS Medway. Sailing from Miami to Rio, as the ship transited to the Falklands to take over the South Atlantic Patrol duties from HMS Forth, a ship on which she has previously served.

Liv’s passion and experience will ensure that Reservists are trained and equipped to drive our RHIB, and the white ensign will be proudly flown in .

AB Rees spent the week on the shooting range completing her Naval Military Training (NMT) 103A course.

Developing her weapon handling and marksmanship skills through tactics drills and live firing serials. She really enjoyed the night time shoot and meeting other Reservists from across the UK.

Our training ensures that we are ready to deal with all threats and enables us to Lead, Fight and Win.

Following on from maritime tabletop activity at HMS Cambria in Feb, Cambrians enjoyed a training weekend in Milford Haven.

One of the deepest natural harbours in the world, Milford Haven is steeped in maritime history. Vital for the UK’s economy, the Port of Milford Haven is Wales’ busiest port and the UK’s leading energy port, which handles over 20% of Britain’s seaborne gas and oil trade.

Taking part in leadership, teamwork, weapons handling and navigation training serials, personnel got to experience the busy port from on the water with our maritime colleagues.

XO Lt Cdr Nathan Duke said, ‘It was a highly successful weekend that strengthened camaraderie and leadership skills, while giving Cambrians the opportunity to observe maritime evolutions within a busy and strategically important port.’

Thanks to all at Port of Milford Haven

Celebrating the joy and companionship that bring into our lives this .

Animals have a long history with the Royal Navy serving as companions, mascots, morale boosters and pest control, before they were banned from HM ships in 1975 due to fears over rabies.

A few even earned unofficial ranks aboard ships and were recognised for their bravery. Some animals working with the RN and SBS have been awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, recognised as the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross and acknowledges outstanding acts of bravery or devotion to duty.

One of our famous Admirals, Collingwood sailed with his beloved dog Bounce. Bounce was only a puppy when he was first taken to sea and was considered by the Admiral to be the perfect naval dog, a great companion and more intelligent than some of his officers.

Present at The Battle of Trafalgar, Bounce’s only weakness was his hatred of gun fire and during battles he would hide below decks.

Bounce spent a faithful 19 years with the Admiral, but was sadly washed overboard during a storm. The crew loved Bounce as much as Collingwood and made a miniature casket and draped it with a Union Flag for burial at sea. They bought him a new dog Bounce 2, who they dressed as a sailor with a tarred pig tail and neckerchief.

Our pets on parade were rewarded with treats and were not harmed during the photos - however, I’m unsure if owners sustained any injuries.
