Congratulations to our two latest fully fledged officers in the wing, Plt Off Fung of 1148 Penarth Air Cadet Squadron and Plt Off Rose of 275 Nantyglo & Blaina Squadron Air Cadets. They both recently passed the Combined Initial Course at RAF Cranwell, where they learned the core of what it is to be a RAFAC officer well done

🚨 WHAT A CAMP! 🚨

What an incredible week our cadets have had on No. 1 Welsh Wing Summer Camp at RAF Northolt! ✈️🇬🇧

From start to finish, the camp has been packed with opportunities to learn, explore, challenge themselves and experience life within the RAF.

Over the week, cadets enjoyed:

🏛️ Visits to the RAF Museum, Imperial War Museum and Science Museum

🔥 Behind-the-scenes visits to key sections of RAF Northolt, including the Fire Section, 32 Squadron, Operations Room and Air Movements.

🎯 An RAF Careers activity, giving cadets an insight into the wide range of careers available within the RAF.

🧪 STEM activities, putting problem-solving, teamwork and technical skills to the test.

🧗 A day trip to RAF Halton for an action-packed high ropes experience!

🚁 And, of course, the absolute highlight for many — an unforgettable Chinook air experience flight, courtesy of RAF Odiham!

A huge thank you to everyone at RAF Northolt, RAF Odiham, RAF Halton and all of the organisations and staff who have supported us throughout the week.

Most importantly, well done to our cadets. They have represented No. 1 Welsh Wing brilliantly, embraced every opportunity and made memories that will stay with them for years to come. 👏

Today was certainly one to remember for our cadets on summer camp at RAF Northolt! ✈️

Our cadets were incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to experience a flight in a RAF Chinook helicopter — an unforgettable experience and a fantastic insight into life in the Royal Air Force. 🚁

A massive thank you to RAF Odiham for making this amazing opportunity possible and giving our cadets a memory they will talk about for years to come!

Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition – 4th - 7th August 2026

A huge congratulations to the 4 CFAVs and 16 cadets from across No 1 Welsh Wing and Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing who have successfully completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award qualifying expedition. We were also pleased to welcome one cadet from No 3 Welsh Wing, who joined the group to complete their Gold practice expedition.

Over the course of four challenging days, the teams walked in excess of 100 kilometres, beginning at Oxwich in the Gower and making their way through Penllergaer and Cadoxton, before completing their expedition at Margam.

The route provided an excellent test of the participants’ navigation, endurance and teamwork, taking them through a remarkable variety of environments. The teams encountered everything from coastal sand dunes and woodland to urban areas, country parks and open countryside, requiring them to continually adapt to the changing terrain and conditions.

Throughout the expedition, participants were required to be entirely self-sufficient for four days, carrying all of their own food, camping equipment, clothing and other essential kit. The considerable distances involved, combined with the weight of their packs and the varied terrain, made this a demanding physical and mental challenge.

Successfully completing a Gold qualifying expedition requires considerably more than simply covering the required distance. Participants must demonstrate resilience, determination, effective teamwork, navigation skills, organisation and the ability to make decisions and overcome challenges as a group.

The achievement of completing more than 100 kilometres over four days is testament to the commitment and preparation shown by everyone involved. There will undoubtedly have been difficult moments along the way, but the teams persevered, supported one another and remained focused on reaching their final destination.

For the Gold participants, completion of this expedition represents an important milestone in their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award journey. The skills, confidence and resilience developed over the last week are achievements that extend well beyond the DofE itself.

Our thanks also go to Flt Lt Heath, Flt Lt Wakeman, APO Fung, CI Tse, CI Sherry and CI Watson, whose time and commitment enabled the participants to undertake this significant challenge safely and successfully.

As one team shared: "The Gold Award may have been challenging for us, but we recognise that the work behind the scenes was no less demanding. From the planning and preparation to the organisation and support throughout the expeditions, we know how much effort goes into making something like this happen. We genuinely cannot extend our gratitude any further. Thank you for all that you have done for us and for helping make our Gold DofE experience one that we will remember!"

Congratulations once again to all 21 participants who took part. You should be extremely proud of what you have accomplished. Well done to everyone involved 👏🥾🏕️

Rhondda Valley Heroes Save Clydach Mountain As Wildfires Stretch Fire Brigade 🙏🫡

A potential disaster on the Clydach mountain in the Rhondda Valley was averted this weekend thanks to the incredible bravery and quick thinking of local residents.

At around 6.30pm on Sunday the 2nd of August, Julie Gower spotted smoke rising from the mountainside. She immediately contacted the fire brigade, only to be told that all local fire crews were already deployed tackling other wildfires in the area.

Realising time was running out, two 24 year old men, Dafydd Gower from Porth and Connor Gibby-Smith from Ynyshir, took it upon themselves to stop the blaze.

Julie drove the young men to the area where they believed the fire was burning. Armed only with water bottles they had filled up before leaving, Dafydd and Connor hiked up the mountain trail to hunt for the flames.

Once they successfully located the fire, they poured their limited water supply around the burning area to create a damp perimeter and prevent the blaze from spreading any further.

Knowing they needed a lot more water to finish the job, the pair ran back down the trail to a nearby street. They urgently knocked on the doors of local houses to ask residents for buckets of water.

Dafydd and Connor then made multiple exhausting trips up and down the mountain trail, carrying heavy buckets to the site of the blaze.

They continued their relentless firefighting efforts until they were completely satisfied that the fire was entirely out and the mountain was safe.

Their amazing community spirit and hard work undoubtedly saved the local landscape from far worse damage.

A Huge Congratulations go out to the wings road marching team after completing the Nijmegen march, in which over 45,000 participants from over 70 different countries took part, ranging in age from as young as 11 to over 90. They came to Nijmegen to walk either the 30, 40 or 50 kilometres route over four days in the city on the Waal river. They all gathered with the one goal in mind, to be awarded the coveted 4 Day March Cross.
Which our cadets have achieved, well done from everyone across the wing we are all immensely proud of you all.
