Myth vs Reality: “I can’t adopt because I don’t own my own home.”

Many people rule themselves out of adoption before they’ve even started the conversation.

The reality is that you do not need to own your home to adopt.

What matters most is whether you can provide a child with a safe, stable and loving environment.

Every adopter’s circumstances are different, and we look at each application individually.

//

Myth vs Realiti: “Allai ddim mabwysiadu achos dwi ddim yn berchen ar fy nghartref fy hun.”

Mae llawer o bobl yn diystyru eu hunain rhag mabwysiadu cyn iddyn nhw gael sgwrs.

Y gwir amdani yw nad oes angen i chi fod yn berchen ar eich cartref i fabwysiadu.

Yr hyn sydd bwysicaf yw a allwch chi ddarparu amgylchedd diogel, sefydlog a chariadus i blentyn.

Mae amgylchiadau pob mabwysiadwr yn wahanol, ac rydyn ni’n edrych ar bob cais yn unigol.

Caroline and Siobhan adopted siblings through South East Wales Adoption Service in 2017, fulfilling a dream they had shared for years. 🫶

For Caroline, adoption had always been part of her story. Adopted herself as a baby, she describes adoption as a positive word in their home and says her own experience helped shape their journey to becoming parents.

Like many adopters, meeting their children for the first time was both exciting and daunting. But it was the small moments that reassured them they were becoming a family - hearing their daughter call them “mum”, celebrating birthdays together and creating memories that continue to make them smile.

Today, adoption remains something they talk openly about as a family, creating a safe space for questions, conversations and new memories together.

//

Mabwysiadodd Caroline a Siobhan siblingiaid trwy Wasanaeth Mabwysiadu De-ddwyrain Cymru yn 2017, gan wireddu breuddwyd yr oedden nhw wedi’i rhannu ers blynyddoedd. 🫶

I Caroline, roedd mabwysiadu wedi bod yn rhan o'i stori erioed. Cafodd ei mabwysiadu ei hun yn fabi, ac mae’n disgrifio mabwysiadu fel gair positif yn eu cartref ac yn dweud bod ei phrofiad ei hun wedi helpu i lunio eu taith i ddod yn rhieni.

Fel llawer o fabwysiadwyr, roedd cwrdd â'u plant am y tro cyntaf yn gyffrous ac yn frawychus. Ond yr eiliadau bach yna wnaeth dawelu eu meddyliau a’u sicrhau eu bod yn dod yn deulu – clywed eu merch yn eu galw’n “mam”, dathlu penblwyddi gyda’i gilydd, a chreu atgofion sy’n gwneud iddyn nhw wenu o hyd.

Heddiw, mae mabwysiadu yn parhau i fod yn rhywbeth y maen nhw’n siarad yn agored amdano fel teulu, gan greu gofod diogel ar gyfer cwestiynau, sgyrsiau a chreu atgofion newydd gyda'i gilydd.

Last week at the Royal Welsh Show, the National Adoption Service for Wales hosted Adoption in Rural Wales - a panel discussion exploring adoption in rural communities across Wales.

Bringing together adoption professionals and people with lived experience, the session created space for open and honest conversations about adoption, challenging common myths and exploring how geography, community and access to support can shape the adoption journey.

A huge thank you to our panel members – presenter Luke Davies, adopters Annwyn Wozencraft and Carys Jones-Evans, and Powys Team Manager Sophie Hitch – for sharing their expertise and experiences.

Many people rule themselves out before they've even had a conversation about adoption. Events like these help challenge assumptions and show that adoptive families come from many different backgrounds and communities across Wales

Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Yr wythnos ddiwethaf yn Sioe Frenhinol Cymru, cynhaliodd Gwasanaeth Mabwysiadu Cenedlaethol Cymru Mabwysiadu yng Nghymru Wledig - trafodaeth banel yn archwilio mabwysiadu mewn cymunedau gwledig ledled Cymru.

Gan ddod â gweithwyr proffesiynol mabwysiadu a phobl â phrofiad personol ynghyd, creodd y sesiwn le ar gyfer sgyrsiau agored a gonest am fabwysiadu, gan herio mythau cyffredin ac archwilio sut y gall daearyddiaeth, cymuned a mynediad at gymorth lunio'r daith fabwysiadu.

Diolch yn fawr iawn i aelodau ein panel - y cyflwynydd Luke Davies, y mabwysiadwyr Annwyn Wozencraft a Carys Jones-Evans, a Rheolwr Tîm Powys Sophie Hitch - am rannu eu harbenigedd a'u profiadau.

Mae llawer o bobl yn eu diystyru eu hunain cyn iddyn nhw gael sgwrs am fabwysiadu hyd yn oed. Mae digwyddiadau fel y rhain yn helpu i herio rhagdybiaethau ac yn dangos bod teuluoedd mabwysiadol yn dod o lawer o gefndiroedd a chymunedau gwahanol ledled Cymru.

Diolch i bawb a ymunodd â ni.

đź’¬ Myth vs Reality

One of the most common misconceptions about adoption is that there is an upper age limit.

The reality is that there is no upper age limit to adopt.

What matters is your ability to care for a child into adulthood, alongside your health, lifestyle, and support network.

//

đź’¬ Myth v Realiti

Un o'r camsyniadau mwyaf cyffredin am fabwysiadu yw bod yna uchafswm oedran.

Y gwir amdani yw nad oes uchafswm oedran i fabwysiadu.

Yr hyn sy'n bwysig yw eich gallu i ofalu am blentyn hyd nes eu bod yn oedolyn, ochr yn ochr â'ch iechyd, eich ffordd o fyw, a’ch rhwydwaith cymorth.

📞 Start with a Conversation

Thinking about adoption?

You don't need to have everything figured out before making an enquiry.

A conversation with your local adoption team is a chance to ask questions, learn more about the process, and explore whether adoption could be right for you.

📞 Dechreuwch gyda Sgwrs

Ydych chi'n ystyried mabwysiadu?

Does dim angen i chi fod wedi datrys popeth yn eich bywyd cyn gwneud ymholiad.

Mae sgwrs gyda'ch tîm mabwysiadu lleol yn gyfle i ofyn cwestiynau, dysgu mwy am y broses, ac archwilio a allai mabwysiadu fod yn addas i chi.
