It promises to be a brilliant afternoon of inspiring stories, honest conversations and a celebration of what’s possible when children are given the right support and opportunities from the very beginning.

Using signing to get ready for school!

Starting school means encountering lots of new words, people, places and routines.

Using signs alongside spoken language can provide an additional visual cue to support children’s understanding, vocabulary and communication.

In this short video, our Speech and Language Therapist, Helen, shows us some key signs.

Try using these signs naturally when you are talking together about school - getting dressed, packing their school bag, travelling to school, meeting the teacher or seeing friends.

Simply say it and sign it as part of your everyday conversation.

Small communication supports can make new experiences feel more familiar, predictable and accessible. 🌟

Supporting your child to manage their energy levels 🪫

Starting something new takes a lot of energy. For children with disabilities or additional needs, starting school, or returning for a new school year, can be especially tiring.

It can help if you think of each child as starting the day with a full battery. Meeting new people, coping with busy or unfamiliar spaces, socialising, moving around and processing new information can all gradually drain it.

Parents and teachers can help by:

⭐ Planning priority activities earlier in the day

⭐ Providing a quiet, safe space to rest and recharge

⭐ Offering help with some tasks, so energy is saved for others

⭐ Using helpful technology or mobility aids when needed

⭐ Making sure there is still energy left for fun

⭐ Reducing after-school activities and demands at the start of term

Small adjustments can make a big difference. Let’s help every child use their energy for what matters most!

We are delighted to have recently secured a substantial three-year grant from St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation towards funding our vital early intervention programme, Better Start, Better Future.

Better Start, Better Future, is there for families who have experienced a traumatic birth, have a premature baby, or have concerns about their baby’s development. Families can come to us with their concerns, without a diagnosis, and find expert help for their child, and emotional support and a listening ear for them as a family on what can feel like an uncertain journey ahead.

We are very grateful to Andrew Pratt and Rob Ingram for supporting our application, and Lindsay Doyle for being such a great Ambassador for our charity.

We look forward to working with the St. James's Place Charitable Foundation over the next three years. Huge thank you again!
