Historical forms of the name show that it’s ‘twr’ as in ‘pentwr’ - referring to the pile of bare rocks rising above Holyhead.

Where does the name Trefdraeth come from?
The words 'tref' and 'traeth' give us a big clue to the meaning of the name - a town by the beach. But there’s more to the story of Trefdraeth than that. The name dates back to the Middle Ages.

❤️Where does the name 'Llanddwyn' come from? 'Llan' refers to a parish or church, and here there was a church dedicated to Dwynwen, the patron saint of Welsh lovers.
The name is older than the ruins that stand here today - and it's likely that some kind of place of worship for Dwynwen stood here before this church.
