Last week, His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alexander Scott, had the pleasure of visiting the incredible team at Maryport Rescue.
Powered entirely by volunteers, Maryport Rescue provides independent lifeboat, flood, swift water, search and rescue services across the Solway Firth, as well as Cumbria's rivers, lakes and inland waterways. Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the team plays a vital role in supporting HM Coastguard, Cumbria Police and Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, often in the most challenging circumstances.
In 2024, in recognition of their outstanding commitment to serving local communities, Maryport Rescue was honoured with The King's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award bestowed upon voluntary groups in the UK.
The visit was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the team's life-saving work, hear first-hand about the difference volunteers make across our communities, and celebrate the dedication, skill and selflessness of those who give their time to help others. The day was made even more memorable by the opportunity to experience a trip aboard one of the rescue boats and see the team's capabilities in action.
A huge thank you to everyone at Maryport Rescue for their warm welcome, for sharing their inspiring stories, and for the invaluable service they provide to communities across Cumbria and beyond. Their commitment is a shining example of the power of volunteering and community spirit.
