We are delighted to welcome five new Deputy Lieutenants to Cumbria.

Appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant, these distinguished individuals join the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and fellow Deputy Lieutenants in supporting civic life, recognising achievement, and strengthening connections with communities across our county.

Celebrating 125 years of the Royal Navy Submarine Service ⚓️

On the 3rd October, our Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Colonel (Retd) Chris Sanderson OBE JP, was honoured to attend the Royal Navy Submarine Services 125th Anniversary Celebration in Barrow-in-Furness, recognising a remarkable milestone in the towns enduring relationship with the UKs submarine programme. The event brought together serving personnel, veterans, cadets, industry representatives and civic leaders to celebrate 125 years of innovation, service and dedication.

In his address, Chris reflected on how "submarines are in Barrows DNA", highlighting the towns unique role in submarine design, engineering and construction since the launch of HMS Holland 1 in 1901. He paid tribute not only to the extraordinary engineering achievements that have helped safeguard Britain's security, but also to the generations of people whose skill, resilience and commitment have shaped Barrows world-renowned submarine-building legacy.

As the Royal Port of Barrow marks this historic anniversary, we join in recognising the submariners, shipbuilders, families and communities who have contributed to a story of national and international significance for more than a century. Congratulations to everyone involved in this special celebration, and here's to the next 125 years.

🌟 Introducing Cumbria's Lord-Lieutenants Cadets for 2026/27 🌟

As we celebrate the first-ever National Cadet Week, we are delighted to introduce one of Cumbria's newly appointed Lord-Lieutenants Cadets for 2026/27, Leading Cadet Blake Atkinson of Whitehaven Sea Cadet Corps. ⚓

The role of a Lord-Lieutenants Cadet is a prestigious appointment, recognising young people who have demonstrated exceptional commitment, leadership and service through the cadet movement. Throughout the year, Blake will support the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria at official engagements and events, acting as an ambassador for cadets across the county.

Blake, 16, studies Chemistry, Economics and History at Cockermouth School Sixth Form and enjoys spending time in the Lake District fells, fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting and, of course, Sea Cadets. Reflecting on his cadet journey, Blake said: 'Through my time in Sea Cadets I have learned invaluable skills, from sailing and rowing to mechanical and electrical engineering. Cadets build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills in young people and have taught me lessons that simply cannot be learned in a classroom.'

Looking ahead, Blake hopes to pursue a career as a land agent, helping to support rural land management and economic growth in rural communities.

Congratulations, Blake, on this well-deserved appointment. We look forward to seeing all you achieve in your year as a Lord-Lieutenants Cadet.

Celebrating Cumbrian excellence 👏

His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alexander Scott, was delighted to present Redmayne 1860 with The Kings Award for Enterprise in International Trade yesterday, recognising the company's outstanding success in bringing Cumbrian craftsmanship to customers around the world.

Founded in 1860, Redmayne 1860 is one of Cumbria's oldest tailoring businesses, renowned internationally for its bespoke tailoring, with every garment still cut and made in-house in Carlisle.

The Kings Awards for Enterprise are the United Kingdoms most prestigious business awards, recognising exceptional achievement and innovation across British industry. The award is a testament not only to Redmayne 1860s remarkable international growth, but also to its commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship and investing in the next generation of skilled tailors.

Congratulations to Claire Mahon, Tom Mahon and the entire Redmayne 1860 team on this outstanding achievement and for continuing to showcase the very best of Cumbria on the global stage.

🌟 National Cadet Week 2026 begins today! 🌟

This week, well be celebrating the incredible young people who make up Cumbria's cadet community and recognising the positive impact they have across our county. Throughout the week, well be:

✅ Introducing our Lord-Lieutenants Cadets for 2026/27
✅ Sharing what it means to be a cadet in Cumbria
✅ Exploring the role of the Cumbria Lieutenancy
✅ Showcasing cadets supporting civic, ceremonial and community events across the county
✅ Following Deputy Lieutenants as they attend events and engagements throughout National Cadet Week

From leadership and teamwork to service and community spirit, cadets represent the very best of our young people, and we cant wait to share their stories with you. Follow along all week and join us in celebrating.

Last week's swearing-in ceremony welcomed five new magistrates, including one of our Deputy Lieutenants, Group Captain Mark Leeming.

A wonderful occasion attended by the High Sheriff, Shirley Fawcett, His Honour Judge Michael Fanning, and our Deputy Lieutenant, Ian Brown who represented the Lord-Lieutenant, celebrating those who have chosen to serve their communities through the Magistracy.

Battle of Britain Service of Thanksgiving, Commemoration and Rededication.

Deputy Lieutenant Tess Hart was honoured to represent His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria at the annual Battle of Britain Service of Thanksgiving, Commemoration and Rededication held at Carlisle Cathedral on the 20th September.

The service brought together representatives from the RAF, local civic leaders, cadets, veterans and members of the community to remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Battle of Britain. Highlights included readings from RAF personnel and cadets, inspiring music from the Cathedral Choir, and a thought-provoking sermon reflecting on the enduring legacy of those who defended our nation.

Adding a special personal touch to the occasion, Tess was also involved in arranging the Cathedral flowers for the week. In place of the planned autumn displays, beautiful floral arrangements in blue, white and red were created to reflect the significance of the service, complete with silver wings in tribute to those remembered.

We thank all those involved in organising and participating in this meaningful act of remembrance and rededication.

Time is running out to nominate for The Queen’s Reading Room Medal, a prestigious award recognising individuals who champion books, storytelling and the transformative power of reading within their communities.

From running book clubs and literacy projects to supporting wellbeing through reading or creating opportunities for others to connect through stories, this award celebrates those who have made an exceptional impact and inspired a love of reading in others.

If someone comes to mind, now is the time to put them forward and ensure their dedication receives the recognition it deserves.
