SUPPORT FOR FUNDRAISER IS 'HUMBLING' SAYS CHAIR

A fundraising page has been launched to support the families of two police officers killed on duty.

Dyfed Powys Police Federation members are being encouraged to consider supporting the appeal following the tragic deaths of Cleveland Police officers PC Matt Blades and PC Tom Clough.

More than £800,000 has been raised since the appeal was launched by Cleveland Police Federation on Sunday.

PC Clough, 38, and PC Blades, 37, died when a Volkswagen Passat collided with their marked armed response car on the A66 near Middlesbrough. Five other people also died in the collision.

Dyfed Powys Police Federation chair Delme Rees said: “On behalf of the branch, I extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of PC Blades and PC Clough, and to everyone affected by the collision.

“It is humbling to see the generosity people have shown towards their families. At a time when we could be forgiven for thinking the public don’t care about police officers, the scale of the public response to the appeal has been moving.

“They are showing that they stand with the families and the colleagues left behind in the aftermath of this needless tragedy. That means an enormous amount to the policing family.

“No amount of money can take away the pain of losing someone you love, but this incredible support will help make things a little easier financially in the future and sends the message to those families that they are not alone."

✍️ BRANCH URGES MEMBERS TO CONTACT THEIR MP OVER PC HARPER KILLERS

Dyfed Powys Police Federation is calling on members and the public to contact their local MP to help block the early release of PC Andrew Harper’s killers.

PC Harper, a Thames Valley Police officer, died in August 2019 after being dragged by a car while attempting to stop a group who were towing away a stolen quad bike in Berkshire.

Two of the men that were in the car were each convicted of manslaughter and given 13 years in prison.

The case has returned to the national spotlight after it emerged that Cole and Bowers could be released before completing their sentences in the Early Release Scheme.

The campaign to block their early release has attracted huge public support, with a petition calling for PC Harper’s killers to remain in prison having passed one million signatures.

Now Dyfed Powys Police Federation secretary Ceris Davies is encouraging people to write to their MP to get their support.

Ceris said: “More than a million people have taken the time to sign this petition, and that sends a very clear message about the depth of feeling in policing and the public.

“People understand the risks police officers face and believe those who kill an officer in the line of duty should face the full consequences of their actions.

“PC Andrew Harper was doing his job and trying to protect the public when he lost his life.

“His family and colleagues have had to live with that loss ever since, and the prospect of those responsible being released early is, understandably, deeply distressing.

“We are asking people to make their voices heard and contact their MP. When Parliament returns, MPs need to understand just how strongly people feel about this and the need for a change in the law.”

🚴 CHAIR REFLECTS ON FIRST TIME CYCLING ON UNITY TOUR

Federation chair Delme Rees was among those honouring fallen officers over the weekend as the Care of Police Survivors (COPS) Service of Remembrance took place to cap off the 2026 Police Unity Tour (PUT).

The annual service was held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, the end destination for all PUT participants cycling in from across England and Wales after a three-day bike ride in memory of officers who have died on duty.

The ride itself also raises money for COPS, the charity for family members of these late individuals to connect with each other and share their experiences of losing a loved one in the police.

After twice being part of the support staff for the event’s Wales chapter, branch chair Delme was involved as a rider for the first time in this year’s PUT, which was held from Friday 7 August to Sunday 9 August.

Speaking at the arboretum, he said: “It’s been an emotional weekend, but also really impressive to meet up with all the other chapters here today, because you can see how big this event is for policing.

“It’s my first time doing this [as a rider], and it’s been a good challenge.

“We’ve cycled from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury – once we got out of the Welsh mountains, it wasn’t too bad – and then Shrewsbury to Telford, followed by Tamworth and at that point, we were in Staffordshire for the final leg of the journey to the Arboretum.

“It was all absolutely worth it to honour our fallen colleagues, and to show their families and friends that we will never forget about them in this profession.”

Delme added that he would like to see more branch members get involved in the event and experience such a special highlight in the policing calendar for themselves.

🚵 CHAIR READY TO TAKE ON UNITY TOUR CHALLENGE

Dyfed Powys Police Federation chair Delme Rees has described the Police Unity Tour charity cycle ride as ‘an incredible event’.

Delme will take on the challenge for the first time this year after twice being part of the team that supports the riders.

Branch secretary Ceris Davies, meanwhile, will take up the role in this year’s support team in the Federation’s welfare van.

Delme said: “I’m looking forward to it.

“Working as a police officer, it doesn’t lend itself to going out on group rides with friends from work - everyone has different rest day patterns as well as different shift start and finish times.

“You need to plan well ahead to be able to go for rides with colleagues, and even then, shifts get changed at short notice, so officers have to drop out.

“The Police Unity Tour is an incredible event. Representing the unity from all officers, regardless of role or where they come from, it is one of the positive sides of policing."

Dyfed Powys Police Federation members have the chance to respond to this year's police pay award by taking part in the Pay and Morale Survey.

Branch chair Delme Rees has said the system for determining police pay was ‘not fit for purpose’ after the Government rejected the Police Remuneration Review Body's (PRRB) of a 3.9 per cent pay rise. Instead officer pay will increase by 3.5 per cent.

Now Delme is encouraging officers to use the Pay and Morale Survey to share their views on the pay award, and other issues facing policing.

He said: “Our members will have every right to be frustrated by this year's pay award and the way it was reached.

“The Government has once again shown it can simply ignore the recommendations of the independent pay review body which, in my view and the view of many others, demonstrates that the current system is broken.

"That makes this year's Pay and Morale Survey more important than ever."
