From the 16th of December, Woodland Trust Scotland will be undertaking some management work in Glencharnoch Wood. They will be removing the Norway spruce by the Wolf’s head carving to reduce seeding into the bog, to deal with failing trees, and to create space for under-represented native species, as well creating a small open water area for dragonfly habitat and resurface a section of path to deal with the trip hazards.

From the 16th of December, the open water area will be cleared and path material brought in. Access will remain open and warning signage will be in place due to the machinery moving onsite. There won’t be any work during the school holidays. From the 6th of January, the felling, extraction, and resurfacing work will require the path to be closed from time to time, with a signposted diversion put in place during these times.

The small area felled will be replanted in the spring, with natural regeneration also encouraged.

"The Cairngorms Rare and Wild Connections Project is coming to an end. Come and explore where we've worked and what has been achieved."

See the entry about Twinflower translocation near Carrbridge that we are helping to monitor:

Woodlands near Carrbridge:
3 translocation sites were selected near Carrbridge for Twinflower translocation. There are no wild Twinflower patches in the upper Dunlain valley at all, but plenty of suitable and holistically managed pine woodland available for it to re-establish. The picture above shows the first flower recorded on our translocation plots, an exciting start with many more to come.

(Note location only representative, not precise to protect translocation plots of rare plants)

The Woodland Trust Volunteer Conference was held in the Boat of Garten on Saturday, September 21st, 2024, with an optional visit on Sunday to the Woodland Trust's Glencharnoch Woods in Carrbridge. We were delighted by how many volunteers joined us on Sunday. There were so many that we had to split into two groups: Ross Watson, the manager, guiding around half the woods, and Roy Brown, the Volunteer Warden, covering the other half. There was positive feedback about the variety of habitats and the projects to improve the wood's biodiversity.

There are currently a good number of Creeping ladies tresses orchid (Goodyera repens) flowering in Glencharnoch and Ellan Woods, Carrbridge.
I have found a dozen or so locations in the woods. Creeping ladies tresses are designated as a nationally scarce plant. The flowers grow spirally around the stem but tend to turn towards the sun.
It's not too difficult to spot the white flowers, especially if it's sunny. The sites are not far from the paths, so there is no need to leave the paths. If you would like to know where to find one of the sites (I have permission from the WT to disclose one site), send a DM.

The barriers at the entry to Glencharnoch Wood on Station Road (the furthest entrance) have been removed to improve accessibility and create a more welcoming environment. Previously, individuals with pushchairs were unable to pass through the old barriers. Note that the fully accessible entrance to the woods is just a short distance down the road towards the village.

Latest post from our community ranger Duncan: The skies around us have been restless with geese in recent days as the urge to migrate north gets ever stronger. There is a great German word for this urgency – zugunruhe. Geese numbers are building up with birds from further south joining wintering flocks here, before launching on an extraordinary, cross-sea journey, back to their breeding grounds in Iceland. I wish them luck.
