Drill night this week, we practiced door entries and branch techniques. Door entry procedures allow us to safely move through buildings without introducing smoke into clear rooms and to avoid potentially hot conditions behind a closed door.

We use various settings on our β€˜branches’ to change the way water is delivered from a hose, a fine mist above the head protects the firefighters from hot gases so they can advance towards, and extinguish a fire with a longer β€˜pulse’ of water.

We were alerted yesterday afternoon to a fire in an outbuilding containing a swimming pool. On arrival the building was well alight with flames issuing through the roof. Appliances from Wincanton and Shepton Mallet kept a steady supply of water until the water carrier from Yeovil arrived. Crews used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and 51mm jets to extinguish.
We returned to the property a few hours after the fire was extinguished to check for hotspots.

It was an early wake up for a crew from Castle Cary today. Shortly after 1am we were alerted to a car fire. On arrival this actually turned out to be an RTC. Luckily the driver was unhurt and out of the vehicle. Due to one car hanging over a short drop, the crew made the scene and the cars safe before returning to the station.

We were mobilised at lunch time today to a car fire in Bruton. On route to Bruton assistance was requested due to the proximity of the fire to a petrol station. A further appliance was sent from Wincanton.

On arrival the crew quickly got to work with a hose reel jet and breathing apparatus. The forecourt staff had acted quickly to shut off the fuel pumps and the incident was promptly dealt with.
