Galloway Kite Trail

Galloway Kite Trail Red kites a successful reintroduction and natural wonder The trail offers a suggested route designed to give you the best chance of seeing red kites.

Along the way, you'll also discover a rich diversity of other wildlife, historical attractions and, of course, some of the most scenic countryside and views around Loch Ken, the region's largest water body. There are also some excellent places to stop for a bite to eat, maybe something stronger or get involved in other more adventurous activities, from walking or cycling to sailing or even laser-q

uest! Red kites are a bird of prey once extinct in Scotland and England but have now returned to Galloway. RSPB and Scottish Natural Heritage started a reintroduction project here in 2001. Since then, the population has grown to over 300 birds and continues to expand. In 2011, we saw 58 nesting pairs with 100 chicks fledging. Thanks to public support, these birds are now thriving in this area.
