The Ghost Hunt Returns to Threave House...

On Saturday 5th September, we’re returning to Threave House with our Good Old-Fashioned Ghost Hunt, presented in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland.

Once the doors close for the day, we’ll investigate in small groups, spending time in the turret rooms, Billiard Room and on the main staircase, where a number of curious experiences have been reported.

Footsteps have been heard on the stairs, and during one investigation a guest felt as though someone had pushed past them. Elsewhere in the house, objects have reportedly moved by themselves and shadowy figures glimpsed...

We’d love for you to join us.

**Saturday 5th September, 8pm-2am**

Fruit pruning and Strawberries!

The trainees have completed some of their induction such as health and safety, meeting the teams, learning how to water glasshouse plants, and a tour of the garden.

We thought it would be nice for them to get their hands dirty so this afternoon they are working with Jacob (ex trainee, now staff member) in the walled garden.

Zoe and Grace have been taking the summer growth off of the top fruit (apples and pears) to allow air and light in. Whilst Andy, Kieran and Daniel have been helping to lift and pot strawberry runners ready for planting next year.

Every garden needs a gnome and we are delighted to welcome our 'Guardian of the Garden' to Threave Garden. The beautiful and fun willow sculpture has been created onsite by local artist Trevor Leat.

See if you can spot it on your next visit.

The new trainees have arrived!

We would like to welcome the new trainees to Threave School of Heritage Gardening for 2026-2027.

This year Andy, Grace, Kieran, Zoe and Daniel will be learning and working with our staff and volunteers to learn as much as they can about horticulture and working in a public garden.

Help us welcome them by saying hello if you see them in the garden. We hope they enjoy their year with us.

A warm welcome to Thomas, who has joined the Ranger team based here at Threave Garden & Nature Reserve 👋

Thomas will be working with us across the wider countryside, getting involved in practical conservation, habitat work and general maintenance, while working alongside our fantastic volunteers — to name but a few things.

There is always plenty to learn and certainly never a shortage of jobs to get stuck into!

We are really pleased to have Thomas on board and hope you will join us in giving him a warm Threave welcome. 😊

Welcome to the team, Thomas! 👍

Blue is the colour of beauty.

Gentiana asclepiadea (willow gentian) is an herbaceous perennial that grows best in a woodland setting. With its lovely blue flowers and arching stems it really adds structure to a shady border.

It is very hardy, originating from Europe to Iran and prefers humus rich, acidic soils.

It can be found on the Ericaceous beds and in the main woodland, looking especially prominent just now.

Come meet the cows that graze the nature reserve using traditional methods combined with tech solutions to improve nature and biodiversity.
Join the Nature Friendly Farming Network and National Trust for Scotland at Threave Nature Reserve for a non-farmer-friendly event exploring how traditional practices meet modern innovation.
Join us to explore how heritage breed cattle and cutting-edge no-fence technology can enhance biodiversity and also produce quality local beef.
This event is for those who wonder if cows are good for nature, climate and environment and what to think about when choosing who to pay for your beef.

Speakers:
David (NTS Head Ranger): David will explain the wider ecology (grasslands, wetlands, woodlands) of the reserve and how the cattle act as ecosystem engineers.

Ruth Ashton-Shaw (Local Farmer): A leader in organic food, Ruth will share her insights on the vital link between healthy soil and the food on our plates.

David will introduce us to the cows themselves
discussing their welfare and how the GPS technology works on a day-to-day basis.

If this event is sold out or the ticket type that you require is not available, please contact Nim on [email protected] to be added to the waiting list.
