Castleton Cold War Bunker

Castleton Cold War Bunker A page dedicated to the restoration of the derelict Cold War Bunker in Castleton, North Yorkshire. To arrange a visit, please contact us.

The Royal Observer Corps operated buildings on our site at Castleton between December 1936 and September 1991. During the 1950's after the demise of the Second World War, the role of the ROC changed, which is when the underground bunker was built in April 1959. For over 50 years, ROC Personnel monitored the skies and radiation levels and were ready to act to protect the local residents and act as

an information cell to Central ROC and RAF Strike Command. After the site was abandoned in 199, ownership reverted to the Danby Estate and it lay derelict for over 20 years, until we were able to secure it with permission from the estate in 2012. Apart from some important and immediate safety repair work, not too much was done with the site as we concentrated on our main museum in Chop Gate which holds regular open days and events. The site at Castleton has suffered numerous vandal attacks despite being empty. We hope that in 2017 we can begin to restore the bunker properly back to how it was in its operational days.

Recent visitors to our open day may have noticed a new piece of equipment in our collection. A few weeks back, we were kindly donated a Post Instrument Map Table & Tripod courtesy of our friends at Portadown Post in Northern Ireland. The post instrument played a vital role in the work of the Royal Observer Corps in their early years and we would have had one just like this at Castleton. Even in the absence of the actual instrument itself, having this piece of kit really helps to show how the role of the ROC evolved over the years to our visitors. The map table does require some restoration work, so some of the donations received at our recent event will cover the cost of replacing the glass and restoring the map itself. A big thanks must also go to our friend Ed at Cuckfield Nuclear Bunker/Royal Observer Corps Post in Sussex for kindly transporting it for us.

Thanks to everyone who visited us today for our Open Day, we hope you all enjoyed it!
