Today we celebrated the life of Anne Hare, Caterham resident and former District Councillor of the Harestone ward.

Anne was an amazing person. A rally driver. An accomplished sailor. She even led a teachers strike in Madrid under Franco!

In later years, Anne volunteered at the local Citizens Advice Bureau, raised thousands of pounds for local charities through her love of gardening and was a stalwart of the Caterham Liberal Democrats.

We are grateful for everything that Anne has given to our local community.

Claire Coutinho refuses to back bill to stop puppy smuggling and pet theft

Claire Courtinho MPs refused to back a bill to end puppy smuggling, pet theft and live animal exports in the UK.

On Wednesday (21st June), the opposition attempted to force the government to bring back the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill. Last month, the Government broke their manifesto promise to crack down on pet theft, puppy smuggling and banning live animal exports.

The Liberal Democrats re-tabled the Government puppy smuggling bill and called on Conservative MPs to keep their promise, but they have refused.

Now Conservative MPs including Claire Coutinho refused to back a motion to bring the bill back within the next month and instead launched yet another consultation, this is despite Claire saying in May 2021 that recommendations would be published in Autumn of that year.

East Surrey Liberal Democrats have criticised this move, accusing the government of breaking another manifesto pledge, turning their back on puppies and allowing traffickers to exploit the pet market.

The party has launched an online campaign and petition to end puppy smuggling and is urging pet owners and residents of East Surrey to sign at libdems.org.uk/puppy

Liberal Democrat spokesperson East Surrey, Claire Malcomson said:

“The Conservative party promised to deliver this Bill in their election manifesto, and the Government even drafted the wording of the new law. It is shameful that Claire Coutinho has broken her promise to protect animals from cruel smuggling gangs.

“Dogs are much loved family members, and we have seen an increase in dog thefts in recent years, with limited consequences for those committing such a heinous crime.

“Claire Coutinho and this Conservative Government has left pet owners, animal welfare charities and residents of East Surrey rightfully angry.

“The Liberal Democrats want to see greater protections for puppies, with criminals who target our beloved pets handed harsher punishments.”

Conservative MP Claire Coutinho urged to vote for Boris Johnson censure motion

Liberal Democrat candidate for East Surrey has called on local Conservative MP Claire Coutinho to vote for a motion in Parliament next week to censure Boris Johnson.

It comes after the Privileges Committee recommended Boris Johnson is suspended for 90 days for “deliberately misleading” Parliament over partygate.

The Liberal Democrats said voting against the motion would be “an insult to bereaved families who grieved alone while Boris Johnson partied.” The vote to approve the Privileges Committee’s recommendations is expected in Parliament on Monday 19 June.

Liberal Democrat candidate Claire Malcolmson for East Surrey commented:
“This report is completely unprecedented. Never before has a former British Prime Minister been found to have lied to Parliament and treated the public with such contempt.
“Claire Couthino needs to examine her conscience and confirm she will vote to censure Boris Johnson. Anything less would be an insult to bereaved families in East Surrey who grieved alone while Boris Johnson lied and partied.
“The Conservative Party is now in a full blown civil war, while people struggle to afford to pay their mortgage or get a GP appointment. It’s time that Conservative MPs stopped fighting among themselves and focused on tackling the problems facing the country, from the NHS crisis to the cost of living.”
