Young musicians will have the opportunity to form bands and prepare for a live performance within five days in a new unique workshop provided by Tolbooth Stirling.

The ‘Gig in a Week’ project is aimed at young people between S1-S6 and is an exciting new addition to the many creative learning opportunities offered at Tolbooth.

As part of the project, young people work alongside music industry professionals over the course of a week to write original songs, learn about aspects of live music including lighting and stagecraft. The programme culminates with a real, youth-led gig put on by the participants at Tolbooth, which was recently named Local Live Music Venue of the Year at the Scottish Hospitality Awards.
The initiative also dives into the promotional side of music, including photography and gig promotion.

The first Gig in A Week which took place in July was a resounding success with young participants giving rave reviews about their experience of working alongside former BBC Introducing presenter and producer Ally McCrae and Janine Shilstone, lead singer of the rock group, Vukovi.

Ally McCrae said: “Being involved with ‘Gig in a Week’ was a pleasure, it's amazing to see something like this existing for Stirling's young aspiring music makers, and potential industry professionals. Getting the space and time, for free, to play, to make connections, to learn and hopefully be inspired about other sides of the industry is so important to help readdress the vast economic inequalities in who gets to make music a career.”

Janine Shilstone said: “I had an incredibly rewarding experience being a tutor for ‘Gig in a Week’. Not only was the venue and facilities industry standard but also the organisers and the support staff were extremely helpful, friendly, professional and organised.
To see what the participants achieved in a week was so satisfying to witness. I imagine it will be an experience they’ll remember for a long time as well as the skills and tips they picked up.”

Finance, Economy and Culture Convener, Cllr Gerry McLaughlan said: “The Gig in a Week project is an exciting opportunity for young people with a passion for music to gain real-life experience of the workings of the music industry by learning from professionals who have worked alongside some of the best names in the country.

“Tolbooth Stirling continues to offer fantastic creative learning projects for young people including the popular, Tolbooth Youth Voices and Pump Up the Jam, which foster a positive environment for young people to thrive, develop new skills and grow in confidence.”

Gig in a Week will take place again over the October break, running from 12-15 October from 10am-4pm and on 16 October from 1.30pm-8pm. Spaces are free but limited so sign-up is essential and can be done at www.stirlingevents.org where spaces can be booked soon. Tolbooth Youth Voices is a free weekly singing group aimed at primary school aged children who want to sing in a fun, no-pressure environment, and is supported by YMI funding.

Pump Up the Jam is a weekly songwriting group aimed for young people aged 11-18 aimed at gearing musicians towards creating their own original music which operates on a pay what you can, suggested price model.

Your Stirling, Your Say: Early Learning and Childcare Consultation

In Scotland eligible children (i.e. all children aged three or four, and two years olds who meet specific eligibility criteria) are entitled to up to 1140 funded (free) hours per year of early learning and childcare (ELC). In Stirling Council Local Authority nurseries, funded hours are currently delivered over 25 or 30 free hours per week, dependent on whether the nursery is operational in line with the school term time or over extended weeks of the year.

It has been 10 years since the Scottish Government introduced, and started to phase in, the expansion of ELC. Since then, there have been a number of changes, including; families working patterns, childcare needs, and falling birthrates. Stirling's main model of ELC delivery with an extended day and extended year, has led to challenges in the recruitment and retention of staff, cover for staff absences, and less time for staff to have professional learning opportunities. We plan to review our ELC delivery models to respond to changing need and current challenges.

To maintain the quality of ELC provision, we want to hear from you about what is working and explore whether other ELC delivery models would suit families' needs, as well as address the challenges that we are currently facing. Your feedback will help inform a review of ELC service delivery.

Public drop-in sessions have been arranged as Stirling prepares to host BBC Radio 2 In The Park 2026 at Stirling City Park on 11, 12 and 13 September.
Stirling Council is working closely with the BBC and event organisers, Far and Beyond (FaB), to help make this a great experience for visitors, residents and everyone involved.
We know that an event of this scale can have an impact, and we are finalising plans to help keep any disruption to a minimum during the event period. To help with this, we’ve organised two drop-in sessions on 17 August where people can come along and hear more about the event, the traffic management plans, and raise any questions or issues.
Both sessions will be held in the Lesser Halls, Albert Halls, Dumbarton Road, Stirling, FK8 2QL:
• Session 1 - 17 Aug: 2.30pm – 4.30pm
• Session 2 - 17 Aug: 5.30pm – 7.30pm.

Update on some roadworks below

Updated 7 August 2026: Works on the A84 at Craigforth Roundabout have been completed, however, works at Auction Mart Roundabout now require an extra night, which will take place on the night of Wednesday 12 August; new information below:

OVERNIGHT RESURFACING ON A84 AT CRAIGFORTH

• Works start on Monday 20 July
• Traffic lights with convoy in place until Thursday 13 August

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are set to carry out resurfacing on the A84 between Craigforth Roundabout and Auction Mart Roundabout, west of Stirling from Monday 20 July.

Works will be carried out between the hours of 7pm and 6am and are expected to be completed by the morning of Thursday 13 August. No works will be undertaken on Friday or Saturday evenings.

To protect the workforce and members of the travelling public, temporary traffic lights will be in use when works are taking place, with road users escorted through the site at 10mph by a convoy vehicle. Auction Mart Roundabout and its approaches will be reduced to a single lane to facilitate the works in this area.

To minimise disruption to the public, all lane restrictions and slip closures will be removed outwith working hours.

Access for emergency services and scheduled bus services will be maintained for the full duration of the works. Temporary bus stops will be in place within the site extents.
Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the proposed traffic management arrangements in advance of works commencing and to minimise any inconvenience.
Euan Burnett, BEAR Scotland’s North West Planned Maintenance Manager, said: “This resurfacing on the A84 between Craigforth Roundabout and Auction Mart Roundabout will fix existing defects in the road surface and upgrade road markings, greatly improving quality and safety for road users.
“We thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance of these works taking place.”

New public engagement events to take place as work begins on Bridge of Allan Flood Protection Scheme

Public engagement events about the upgrade to Bridge of Allan’s Flood Protection Scheme have been arranged for August as work on the major project gets underway.
An online session is being held on Monday 17 August (6.30-7.30pm) where Stirling Council officers and representatives from the appointed contractor, Balfour Beatty, will be available to answer questions about the project. An in-person event will also take place on Tuesday 18 August at Bridge of Allan Library (2.30- 4.30pm).
The new infrastructure will protect 87 properties and 700 metres of road from flooding from the Allan Water, with flood defence walls upgraded along Allanvale Road, Cornton Road and Fountain Road, and flood defence bunds added at Inverallan Road and the adjacent factory site.
In total, £16 million of funding for the scheme will be provided by the Scottish Government as part of the national programme, ‘Funding of Flood Scheme Protections’, with the remainder coming from Stirling Council. It is expected to be completed by winter 2027.
A number of localised traffic control measures will take effect in August to facilitate the ongoing works:
• Inverallan Road and Henderson Street will have 3-way traffic lights put in place from Monday 10 August for two weeks
• Allanvale Road (Cornton Road to Union Street) will be fully closed from Monday 24 August until 27 January 2027. Local residential access will be maintained throughout this period.
• Cornton Road southbound (Fire Station to Orchard Road) will be closed from Monday 10 August until early 2027 as part of the first of three phases of work to this section of the Flood Protection Scheme.
A temporary access road at Lyon Crescent is being constructed to maintain local traffic flow.
Environment, Transport and Net Zero Convener, Cllr Alasdair Tollemache said: “We’re committed to keeping everyone up-to-date with the latest developments on the Bridge of Allan Flood Protection scheme which is why we have arranged these new events as we move into the construction phase of the project.

“I’m pleased to see work starting at the site on this vital project which will help protect homes and businesses against the devastating impacts of flooding which is becoming increasingly common and more severe with climate change.

“While disruption on a project of this scale and complexity is unavoidable, working with the contractor, we will do all we can to minimise this for the local community.
“If you have any questions about any aspect of the Flood Protection Scheme, please sign up for the online session on 17 August or come along if you are able, to the event at Bridge of Allan Library on 18 August.

I hope this message finds you well. My name is James, and I volunteer with the 2050 Climate Group, a youth-led charity dedicated to educating, engaging, and empowering young people to lead the transition to a just and sustainable society.
We are excited to announce the launch of our 3rd Climate Action Leadership Programme (CALP)! This initiative reflects our volunteers' dedication and hard work, and we are thrilled to share it with you.

About the Programme
The Climate Action Leadership Programme (CALP) is a free and flexible opportunity designed to equip young people aged 18-35 with the leadership skills and climate change knowledge needed to take meaningful action. CALP builds on a decade of experience to offer our most comprehensive, inclusive, and accessible learning experience yet. The programme includes:

• Free for All: Everything for our learning programme is free and we also offer support through our participation fund to reduce financial barriers.
• Flexible Learning: A mix of in-person and online content.
