Bellacouche

We’re a month in to taking over this important work from Yuli Somme. Positive and beautiful interactions with humans and death… not so everyday conversations happening everyday.

This week we've enjoyed being creative with this bespoke order. Big up the mighty oak.

A beautiful business in new hands!

We are now the very proud owners of Bellacouche.

We have completed our training and are now fully fledged Leafcocoon makers.

Thank you Yuli for cheering us on and inspiring us with your deep knowledge of wool, shroudmaking and natural burials. Your commitment to offering end of life choices which are embedded in nature's cycles is important work that we are honoured to be carrying on.

With much love and enthusiasm Anna and Ysanne

Day 4 of training the new Bellacouche Shroudmakers. This is Yssy, birthing a Leafcocoon with the aid of a Snoutmaiden (grip tool!). Yssy and Anna are old friends, and in partnership are carrying forward the work of challenging the accepted norm of a coffin, at Bellacouche. Both already have the blessing of strong, capable hands and mental dexterity to absorb the subtleties of making the Leafcocoon, a unique and practical burial vessel. I am stepping aside on 1st September after 22 or so years of shroud making funeral innovation.

Bellacouche - on this programme about Dartmoor.

Steeped in myth and untamed beauty, Dartmoor National Park's vast moorlands provide a a sanctuary for rare plant and animal species as well as a treasure trove for archaeologists.

I feel so honoured to be included in this wonderful celebration of hundreds of dedicated crafters and makers in the South West. When you read through the stories of each maker, the reasons for making and how it makes them feel, you will be moved. It is the antithesis of mass overproduction of cheap goods, it is the quiet unspoken revolution we need.

Thank you to Caitlin Pharoah of Hummingbird’s Photography for this monumental piece of work supporting the voices of the makers of the South West.
