Our crews recently attended a fire which resulted in significant damage to two properties.
This incident is a timely reminder of how quickly fire can spread from outside areas into homes—particularly at this time of the year when many people are preparing their gardens for spring and summer.
We’re asking residents to take a moment to think about a few key safety points:
- Smoking materials – ensure ci******es are fully extinguished and never discarded onto garden furniture, planters, or decking. Materials such as rattan and cushions can ignite easily.
- Wooden decking and treatments – many common decking oils, stains and paints are not fire retardant and can increase how quickly fire spreads across surfaces. Be mindful when applying these products, especially near buildings.
- BBQs and outdoor heating – always position BBQs, fire pits and patio heaters well away from fences, sheds, decking and the property itself. Be mindful when using them on or too close to combustible surfaces.
- External electrics – check outdoor sockets, lighting, and appliances for any damage, especially after winter weather. Have them inspected by a qualified electrician.
- Garden storage and furniture – avoid placing combustible items (furniture, bins, stored materials) directly against your home, as these can allow fire to spread rapidly to the structure.
- General housekeeping – keep decking and garden areas clear of dry debris, leaves, and waste which can easily ignite.
Fires that start outside can quickly develop and spread onto a property, causing far more damage than people expect.
Taking a few simple precautions can make a significant difference in preventing incidents like this.
