UPDATE 4pm 23/04/26 - The fire is now mostly out and crews are preparing to leave the scene with the site staff.

There will be reinspections taking place regularly to ensure the area is safe and the fire is fully extinguished.

----------------------

UPDATE 2pm 23/04/26 - Crews have continued tackling the fire throughout the day.

Due to there being several deep-seated areas well-alight, this is a slow process, but good progress is being made.

Firefighters will continue working with site staff, using machinery and a drone, to identify the hot spot areas and tackle them using a wetting agent.

----------------------

UPDATE 8am 23/04/26 - Crews have remained at the scene throughout the night working to contain the fire and prevent further spread.

-----------------------

⚠️ Firefighters are currently responding to a large fire at a landfill site on Pools Road in Wilburton.

Residents nearby are encouraged to close windows and doors while we tackle the fire.

Our crews recently attended a fire which resulted in significant damage to two properties.

This incident is a timely reminder of how quickly fire can spread from outside areas into homes—particularly at this time of the year when many people are preparing their gardens for spring and summer.

We’re asking residents to take a moment to think about a few key safety points:

- Smoking materials – ensure ci******es are fully extinguished and never discarded onto garden furniture, planters, or decking. Materials such as rattan and cushions can ignite easily.
- Wooden decking and treatments – many common decking oils, stains and paints are not fire retardant and can increase how quickly fire spreads across surfaces. Be mindful when applying these products, especially near buildings.
- BBQs and outdoor heating – always position BBQs, fire pits and patio heaters well away from fences, sheds, decking and the property itself. Be mindful when using them on or too close to combustible surfaces.
- External electrics – check outdoor sockets, lighting, and appliances for any damage, especially after winter weather. Have them inspected by a qualified electrician.
- Garden storage and furniture – avoid placing combustible items (furniture, bins, stored materials) directly against your home, as these can allow fire to spread rapidly to the structure.
- General housekeeping – keep decking and garden areas clear of dry debris, leaves, and waste which can easily ignite.

Fires that start outside can quickly develop and spread onto a property, causing far more damage than people expect.

Taking a few simple precautions can make a significant difference in preventing incidents like this.

We would like to remind our communities to always remain vigilant when lighting candles.

Earlier this week, firefighters attended a house fire in March to find a bedroom fully engulfed in fire. Crews from March, Wisbech and Chatteris worked hard to contain the fire and stop the fire from spreading further, before extinguishing it.

It is believed the fire, which destroyed a bedroom and caused serious damage to the upstairs of of the property, was caused by a candle.

There were four people in the home at the time of the fire all of whom were outside the property on the crews’ arrival.

Station Commander Clive Allen said: “The fire is believed to have been caused by a curtain blowing onto a lit candle. We would like to remind people to always remain vigilant when lighting candles. Our advice for the safe use of candles is to never leave them unattended and keep them in a draught-free area away from curtains, furniture and other flammable surfaces. Alternatively, you could use LED candles as a safer option.”

Please be our eyes and ears. Two of our stations have been broken into this week, so we're asking you, our local residents, to help us look out for any suspicious activity around our station.

Chatteris and Gamlingay fire stations were broken into in the early hours of Monday morning and Tuesday evening respectively. At Chatteris, life-saving cutting equipment used at road traffic collisions and other rescues was stolen.

Chief Fire Officer Matthew Warren said: “Break-ins to fire stations are happening across the country and this week we have been victims twice. We are asking for local residents to please help be our eyes and ears, to report any suspicious activity and make a note if possible of any vehicle details including registration number, as well as descriptions of any individuals involved.

"Please also save any CCTV or Ring doorbell footage if it has captured any suspicious activity. The incidents have happened when it’s dark, in the evening and early morning. Entry has been forced, so if you hear a noise coming from one of our stations, please do just look and check to see if it is our firefighters, don’t assume it is. This support by our local communities would be greatly appreciated.”
