Chatteris Museum

Chatteris Museum Focusing on the natural & cultural heritage of Chatteris & the surrounding Fenland villages.

Chatteris Museum is now open in the former Barclays Bank at 2 Park Street, Chatteris PE16 6AE. The museum is entirely volunteer run with the collections owned by The Chatteris Museum Trust, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The concept of a town museum was conceived in 1942 by Charles Dobb, the Town Clerk for Chatteris Urban District Council, in a small display cabinet in the offices of Grov

e House, Chatteris. A Museum Society was formed in 1963 to develop the collection and open to the public. In the mid 1990s the museum moved to the former Doctor's Surgery in Church Lane, and to its current location in 2023. The museum has begun a phased re-opening and our displays will develop as we unpack over 12,000 objects. A National Lottery Heritage Fund grant has enabled redevelopment to begin telling the story of Chatteris and its people.

🧡Pride of place - Chatteris Crested China🍶

Part of the collection donated in 2023 by Chris Pope of Chatteris. ‘Goss China’ refers to the products of the Falcon Pottery owned by William Henry Goss, situated in Stoke on Trent.

In the 1880s they took advantage of the new market for seaside souvenirs and began producing miniature vases and pots with the coat of arms of seaside towns.

By 1910 it became a collecting craze, with every town in Britain having their own crested china and an estimated 95% of homes in Britain having crested china on their mantelpiece!

By 1938 the popularity of crested china waned, but with the current trend of ‘whimsy’ and having more personalised, quirky decor, will items such as these make a return?

This morning we were delighted to welcome Francis Burkitt, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire , to the museum.

Volunteers dug out a High Sheriff uniform from 1889 for the occasion, and discovered the previous High Sheriffs who came from Chatteris.

It was lovely to showcase the vast history of Chatteris and its role within Cambridgeshire and Fenland history.

We promise the Mayor was released from the Town Stocks!

A geologist group visit last week was the perfect excuse to get out our entire fossil collection!

Seeing just how much we have and gaining added insight from the geologists was brilliant. It’s definitely got our minds whirling with ideas of how we can share our fossils in new and exciting ways!

The new gallery spaces are taking shape…

Volunteers have been busy painting the new gallery space, as well as constructing partition display booths.

Our talented volunteers have designed the display booths with easily adjustable partitions using a dowel and hole technique, enabling a fully flexible exhibition space.

We’ve also started collecting the items from our archives for the displays, including the last ticket from Chatteris Station!

Keep an eye out for further updates on our progress!
