Labour’s decision to cancel the A12 widening was bad enough. Now we know the bill for that choice.

Over £212 million of taxpayers’ money has been wasted after Labour scrapped a scheme that had planning permission, survived legal challenge and was fully funded under the last Conservative Government.

That is an appalling waste of public money and an even bigger blow to Essex.

The A12 is one of the county’s most important economic arteries.

Cancelling its upgrade means more congestion, fewer jobs, less investment and slower growth for Essex and the UK.

All this while Labour is demanding thousands more homes are built across Essex, despite scrapping the very infrastructure needed to support them.

Growth doesn’t happen by ministerial press release or government soundbites. It depends on roads, rail and infrastructure. Labour talks about growth, but its decisions are holding Essex back. You cannot ask communities to deliver more homes, more businesses and more opportunity while walking away from the investment that makes that growth possible.

Crucially for Chelmsford this has meant the loss of the planned Junction 19 upgrade, which was intended to improve connections between Boreham, Beaulieu and the new Beaulieu Park Station.

Cancelling Junction 19 while continuing to approve thousands more homes simply doesn’t add up.

The Lib Dems cannot simply assume that residents of thousands of new homes will leave their cars at home and rely on public transport.

Planning needs to be based on how people actually live, not how politicians would like them to travel. More homes without the infrastructure to support them will mean more congestion and more pressure on existing communities

Following the Environment Agency’s announcement of drought across the East Anglian area, Essex & Suffolk Water is introducing a Temporary Use Ban, also known as a hosepipe ban, for customers across the entire supply area.

The temporary restrictions will come into force from 00:01 on Monday 3 August, but they are asking everyone to start making these changes today.

After months of prolonged dry weather, warm temperatures and three successive heatwaves, the Environment Agency has declared East Anglia to be in drought. Low river flows and dry conditions are putting increasing pressure on the environment, and now is the right time for us all to play our part.

From Monday, you must not use a hosepipe to:
💧 Water gardens and plants
💧 Wash cars, patios or boats
💧 Fill swimming or paddling pools
💧 Use sprinklers or pressure washers

By reducing non-essential water use, together we can help protect our rivers and wildlife while safeguarding water supplies through the hot, dry weeks ahead.
