Is your child ready for the move to secondary school? Are you? It’s a daunting time and it’s only natural to have feelings of uncertainty or overwhelm.

But by taking a few simple steps you can help yourself, and your child, feel calmer and more ready for the change.

Try:

🛒Encouraging independence – adjusting to secondary school is largely about initiative and independence and your child needs to find their own way. Help them build trust in their own abilities by increasing their responsibilities within the family.

🎒Getting prepared – visit the school website so you know what to expect. Do a dry run of the route to school so it feels familiar by the time the first day comes along. Buy and label uniform and equipment and get them to practice packing their bag.

How do you help a child make the move from being one of the oldest pupils in the school to one of the youngest?

The step from primary to secondary school can feel like a huge jump but there are things you can start doing now to help with a smooth transition:

🗣Listen – set time to talk about how they’re feeling and try and work through any of their concerns

🚲Trial run – do the route to the new school in advance of starting so it isn’t all new

🎒Prepare – make sure all supplies are bought and labelled ahead of the new term
