Completed project at St Michael’s Church, Lower Machen! ✔️

We are thrilled to have completed this very successful Tower repair project at the lovely Grade II* Listed, Lower Machen church.⭐️

Work included the repair and replacement of defective corbel stonework and merlon capping stonework, re-leading and masonry re-pointing. Cement-rich mortar was contributing to the accelerated decay of the medieval sandstone walling. As much as possible was removed and replaced with an approved lime mortar mix.

☀️ An exciting repairs project starting next week at St Margaret's Church, Babington.

On the grounds of Babington House is this Grade I Listed church.

Thought to have been built in 1748 and designed by John Strachan and constructed by William Halfpenny. The church was commissioned by the Knatchbull family who were living at Babington House at the time.

Today both buildings make for the perfect setting as a wedding venue. 💒

🌟 This weeks Quinquennial Inspection was at St James’ Church, Quedgley in Gloucester Diocese.

🗝️With 14th Century origins, restoration in 1857 and further alterations circa 1980 by Gambier-Parry, the church combines varying architectural features, such as a 14th Century tower and 19th Century North Aisle door.

⏱️The combination of these varying architectural time periods gives the church a unique historical character. Each period contributes to its overall appearance and historical significance.

🔹It is not uncommon to find churches and other historic buildings with such diverse architectural elements, as they often reflect the changing needs and trends of the communities they serve over the centuries!

Quinquennial Inspection at St Peter's Church, Little Comberton in Worcestershire.

🌟 Grade II* Listed 12th Century parish church, enlarged in 15th Century, restored and enlarged in 1886 by William White. The church is believed to stand on the site of a Roman Temple, and artefacts from that period have been found in the churchyard.

🔹There are 3 reinstated 12th Century Norman round-headed windows in the Nave, one with rope moulding around the head.

🔹The south doorway has an unusual 12th Century tympanum of a cross surrounded by 8 whorls.

🔹The North Porch is dated 1639 and is timber-framed with segmental arch under a closed king-post truss.

We recently carried out a survey at this lovely Grade II Listed farmhouse in Gloucestershire.

🌟 17th Century Farmhouse with 19th Century extension and alterations.

🔎There were some very interesing historic features here, including a 17th Century historic door, carpenter's marks and historic burn marks.

Historic Burn Marks:

🕯️Traditionally thought of as the result of tapers attached to beams to provide light which have burnt and charred the timber. However, recent research has proven that this is very unlikely. Dean and Hill (2014) established that the tear-shaped mark cannot be reliably created by accident. Instead, only deliberate human action can create such marks - the taper must be held very still, at a 45-degree angle for up to 20 minutes.

💭 It is believed that burn marks were intended to protect the building from possession by witches, demons and evil spirits. James VI noted that evil spirits entered structures wherever there was a draught, such as doors, windows and fireplaces. Research shows there is a spatial correlation between burn marks and these areas. Burn marks have also been linked to protection against lightning and fire, and prayer, purification and healing.

We love properties with retained period features! 🤩👏

Rosanne and Eleanor surveyed this stunning grade II Listed Georgian property in Gloucestershire last week.

With 18th Century origins, the farmhouse is in a typical Georgian rectangular plan. The main house has been connected with a former artisans cottage of a similar period.

Original features include sash windows with working shutters, exposed beams and oak and flagstone flooring.🤩

🤩It’s always great to see completed projects!

👈Last year we had the privilege of working on this lovely listed building in Cheltenham, transforming it into ‘Tonic’ whilst preserving its historic features.

⭐️ The Grade II* Listed terrace was constructed between 1844 and 1851 as a dedicated shopping street serving the Montpellier Spa area, as part of the Bays Hill estate.

Local Heritage Listing ✨🏛️

🔍We have recently surveyed this lovely property in Gloucestershire. Originally built around mid-19th Century, this property is locally listed.

📝Local heritage lists ensures that the historic and architectural significance of buildings that are of local importance but are not nationally designated, is taken into account during the planning process.

✨This is important as local heritage plays an essential role in creating and reinforcing local character and distinctiveness in the historic environment.

✍🏻Local authorities can formally identify buildings of local significance. However, there is no obligation to have a local list, and only around half of local authorities have them.

Surveying these hidden gems is why we love doing what we do at Arnold Bartosch!
