Seems like a good idea

The UK economy would benefit from a boost of at least £92bn if the country rejoined the European Union, a new report has suggested.

On the 10th anniversary of that fateful referendum in 2016, a study commissioned by Best for Britain and carried out by Frontier Economics researchers has laid bare the economic cost of leaving the EU.

Independent econometric research modelling the key benefits of membership has suggested that the UK would see a GDP increase of between 2.5-3.6% over the next 5-10 years if it were to rejoin the EU.

Currently, the UK government estimates that its post-Brexit trade deals will increase GDP by £15bn, the equivalent of half a percentage point.

But the report’s findings suggest that membership of the EU alone would deliver at least six times more growth (£92bn).

The financial gains would be felt most strongly outside of London as well, in areas such as the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East, thanks to an outsized boost to trade in goods.

Paul Johnson, former director of the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS), said: “A decade on from 2016’s Brexit referendum it is clear that the UK leaving the EU has damaged our economy and left us increasingly exposed to global shocks. The people of Britain are poorer than they need have been.

“As this report shows, if we want to recover as many of those costs as possible, then we need to target not further divergence but deeper integration with our closest and biggest market.”
