To support Newport as an Age Friendly City, we would like to invite you to join our community event to celebrate this year’s International Older Persons Day.

This year’s theme is "Building belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections". The theme emphasises the vital role older people play in fostering social ties and shaping inclusive communities. The event will include a variety of stalls and groups showcasing their services and activities that support and promote the wellbeing of Newport’s older residents

To be held at The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre, Kingsway, Newport, NP20 1HG Wednesday, 7th October 10:00am until 12:00pm.

Our first Wales Women's Survey 2026 is now live.The survey explores women's experiences and priorities in three key areas:· Cost of living pressures· Women's experiences in the workplace; and· Priorities for the new Welsh Government The findings will contribute to our evidence and advocacy work, aiming to address the lack of gender disaggregated data in Wales and helping to ensure that women's voices and experiences inform budget and policy decision-making here.We are particularly keen to hear from women in all parts of Wales, including rural and urban communities, and from a wide range of backgrounds. We would therefore be very grateful for your support in helping us reach women across Wales.If you are able to support us, we would be grateful if you could share the survey with your constituents and wider networks, as well as repost our social media posts on LinkedIn and/or BlueSky.The survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete and can be accessed via the links below:

At Council this week, or Green Party Councillors Lauren and David moved an amendment to the Labour party’s Motion on the M4. The council unanimously supported an M4 Relief road in the past as the answer to the congestions caused by the two lane access to the Brynglas Tunnels. Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford rejected the proposals and instigated a report by Lord Burns that looked at alternative solutions to the traffic problem. One of the key recommendations was an improved rail access and an integrated Metro system that served all the South Wales Valleys. The Plaid Cymru led Senedd have proposed closure of access to the M4 in the City. This will create a massive increase in pollution and congestion on our already gridlocked roads. ”The Labour Motion read: This Council notes and supports the long-standing position of Newport City Labour leaders in favour of the M4 relief road. In light of the Plaid-led Welsh Government’s announcement of a review of the M4 motorway, this Council registers its unequivocal opposition to any proposal to close M4 junctions, or to pursue any measure that diverts motorway traffic onto Newport’s already congested city streets. Such proposals would place an unacceptable burden on residents, businesses and local infrastructure, and must be firmly rejected. The Amendment moved by Lauren read: This Council further believes the Welsh Government should continue implementation of the Burns programme, adapting individual measures where necessary, and properly assess the overall impact of the programme while alternative strategic interventions are considered.”

Our amendment was rejected by Labour and opposition parties with one Tory saying he loved his car and an independent claiming that climate change was a hoax.

Evidence, if it were needed about the effect of tampering with the current system was provided on Friday afternoon when the eastbound section of the SDR bridge was closed due to a traffic accident. The whole of Newport was gridlocked for many hours. David arrived at the bridge at 4.30 and took 90 minutes to get back to Malpas

We are getting closer. Green Candidate Simran Patel was just 87 votes behind Labour. Let’s hope the Farrage/Reform bubble has finally burst. This was a few days after Farrage announced his resignation. The Clacton backlash may put them even further behind nationally.

Welsh Water are carrying out work on Glasllwch Crescent, as part of their work to improve the water network in the Newport west area.
Glasllwch Crescent, will be closed from Saturday 18 July . The work may take up to six weeks. This closure will be from the High Cross roundabout, to just past the junction of Glasllwch Crescent and Western Avenue. Diversions will be in place and will be signposted.

Malpas Road repairs will recommence on 08 May 2026. This will require as before a COMPLETE ROAD CLOSURE from Friday evening until 9am on the following Monday. Local resident will recieve information about access to their properties during the closure. Please make a note in your diaries to make alternative plans for these weekends. The rest of Malpas Road up to Cwmbran Drive will follow a similar pattern. We will keep you informed.
