The A4051 will be closed from Cwmbran Drive to Almond Drive on Monday 29 from 8pm to 5am. There will be no access to or from Montgomery Road and Woodlands Drive and access from the south only to Almond Drive.

From Tuesday 30 until Friday Morning at 5am, the whole section from Cwmbran Drive to the Water Tower at Pillmawr Road will be closed. Access via Pillmawr Road and Almond drive from the south will still be available but Woodlands Drive will be blocked on each night after 8pm

Resurfacing works take place this week on the A4051 Malpas from 8pm each night until 5am

Today: Malpas Road between M4 slip road to Bettws Lane and between Bettws Lane interchange to M4 roundabout
14 to 15 September from 8pm to 5am

Tuesday: Malpas Road between M4 slip road to Bettws Lane 15 to 16 September 8pm -5am

Wednesday: Malpas Road between M4slip road to Pillmawr Road interchange and between Bettws Lane interchange to M4 roundabout 16-17 September from 8pm to 5am

Thursday: Malpas Road between M4 slip road to Pillmawr Road interchange17 to 19 September 8pm to 5am

NCC say that the total closures previously posted are the worst case scenario. They believe that closures will only take place for 10-15 minutes whilst they move equipment out of the way in order to es**rt walkers etc through.

However they do foresee a small closure of possibly a few days on the canal from Bettws Lane heading towards the motorway but walkers, cyclists etc will be able to safely divert via Kimberley Park & Blaen-Y- Pant Crescent.

They say " Any disruption will be kept to a minimum and we are mindful of school pupils travelling to and from Newport High and our primary schools in the vicinity so will do our very best to ensure these users will not be impacted."

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal will be closed for repairs and vegetation clearance for up to 6 months from 21 September 2026.
There will be no access for walker or cyclists during this period.

The whole of the Malpas section of the canal from the rear of Oliphant Circle down to the Motorway and on to Barrack Hill and the whole of the Crumlin Arm of the canal from Shaftesbury up to where the canal goes under the M4 just below 14 Locks.

This is a widely used routes by school children, Cyclist, dog walkers and pedestrians so a considerable inconvenience. It is good however to see Newport City Council taking an interest in this much neglected arm of the Mon Brecon Canal. This is a marvellous wildlife and leisure facility and an important green lung for the city.

Currently there are no feeders for the Malpas stretch of the canal and at present after the long heatwave is almost dry. We hope that this canal will be given more of priority in future and that this wonderful 200 year old relic of our industrial heritage can be finally re-connected from Brecon to Newport.

Malpas Road Resurfacing From M4 Junction 26 to Pillmawr Lane. 14 to 18 September.
The works will take place from 8pm until 5pm to avoid congestion as much as possible. The A4051 however is one of the busiest roads in the UK so traffic build up elsewhere is bound to happen during these times. Share this widely so people can plan ahead and avoid delays on these days.

Newport CC have introduced amendments to active travel routes in the City. We will continue to press for safer and more environmentally friendly walking and cycling routes and better cheaper public transport. Malpas Road repairs will recommence on 08 May 2026. This will require as before a COMPLETE ROAD CLOSURE from Friday evening until 9am on the following Monday. Local resident will recieve information about access to their properties during the closure. Please make a note in your diaries to make alternative plans for these weekends. The rest of Malpas Road up to Cwmbran Drive will follow a similar pattern. We will keep you informed.
